My wife's name for this site
I have been a member just about 2 years to the day. I thought I would share this. I like to look at what others post, and I like to look at their cards, memorabilia, etc. So one day I was drooling over a card a member posted. My wife said: "You looking at baseball card porn again?". I never heard that phrase. So whenever my wife wants to know what I am doing on the computer, I tell her I am "looking at that BB card porn site. "Leon-is this OK to post?

My wife often says "Are you on that baseball card site again?"
which is most often followed quickly by "Well, at least I know where you are and what you're doing."
Although she would never admit it, I think she takes some comfort in that. |
I love seeing other collectors' "Bigguns"
I laugh when my wife says the same thing about my addiction to Net 54. I tell her that it is better than me looking at Porn all night.:p
Leon, Love the Wagner, but isn't amazing how old Wagner looks by 1916. I guess he had been in the league for about 17 years by that time, but it's remarkable how much athletes age slower these days. (No this is not to start a debate on PEDs, just an observation.) Bigguns was Al Bundy's favorite Porn Magazine in Married with Children. I loved that show.:D |

She likes my hobby & the site, instead of posters of cars/pinups I have tobacco adds and AH catalogues in my office.
Yesterday I brought a handful of cards home from the bank to show a few people at the National....my wife saw them on the counter this morning and called me quite upset..."You're not selling your ghost".....she is a keeper. :D |

Reason #2,373 i would never have made it back then. Being outside in the hot sun with no sunscreen on literally sounds like torture to me. |
On a BBQ Forum that I am active on, pics of food cooked are referred to as "food pron".
This "pron" mispelling is intentional, and now mandated on the site because the correct spelling was used so frequently that the site started getting blocked by some company servers as somehting that it really wasn't. |

My wife is starting to come around too. She likes when I show her the pictures from the cool ways people display their collection posts. She gave me permission to have some in my "man cave" but will only allow it if I make and build the displays myself. She also says that I have to sell my "lame shiny cards" before I can buy anymore "old-timers". She's right again!
Giambi is 42 now (looks like the picture is from last year). Roids and HGH don't seem to make him look that much younger than the Wags photo. Along with the sunscreen comment, the contrast in B&W photography makes the wrinkles and "crows feet" more pronounced. |
As I've shared before, my wife calls Net54 and baseball card collecting in general the 'other woman'. So whenever I'm in my office or online, she says I'm with 'Baseball Card Girl'. It's all fun and games; she's never upset over it.
And for the record, as some of you may have read on my site, she's the main reason I got back into collecting. While I don't think she realized just how much I'd get back into it at the time, she's been supportive. She came to the spring Chantilly show with me, she looks at some of my cards when they come in the mail and will listen to me talk about a few cool pickups now and then. When I finished my T206 set, she overheard me telling a dealer that I wasn't sure what to collect next. So, she looked at his cards and picked out a few that she thought were 'neat' and suggested I collect them as well. While I didn't agree with her suggestion, I thought it was super cool she'd do that. Even though I'm selling off a large portion of my collection to fund a new house purchase, she's not happy that I'm getting rid of them because she 'knows how much joy and happiness' they bring me. While cards can be quite expensive, there are a lot worse ways you can spend your time! |

Great thread!
its so nice to hear that some of you have significant others that understand our addiction. |
The other day we were driving and my wife points to the license plate on her passenger side and says, "look honey N173!"
:) |
I'm new to the board as I just got back into cards after getting into restoring cars for years. (told old for that now, lol). Now she sees she has created a monster, no pun intended. She loves that I enjoy collecting, but I think she is trying to find a way to slow me down. Lol.

Peter - You have trained your wife well. Hats off, JJ |
There are two things that get my heart beating. A picture of Kate Upton in a bikini, and a T206 Walter Johnson portrait.
Do they have support groups for people like me? |
Bill, I believe you are in the middle of that support group here!

I wear my Net54 shirt all the time. She knows what this 'hobby' means to me. But her term is 'Net Whatever'....
"You got another 'Net Whatever' package today"... Love it - and her...:) |

Wearing my Net54Baseball t-shirt one night, my wife said, "Who gave you that, your other woman?" Exactly...

Although I lurk frequently, my wife likely has only the vaguest notion of this website, if that. As it doesn't implicate her interests, I see no reason to discuss it and she has never inquired. I'm not suggesting this kind of marriage would work for others, but we've been at it for 30 years now and it seems to work for us.

The first year or so that I browsed N54, it served as a perfect "cover" for me to quickly switch tabs from eBay. My wife has never approved of the money I spend on cards.. But unlike jewelry, bags, electronics, or whatever else people may blow their money on, I always argue that I can get this back if need be. And, my card addiction was an existing condition when she met me.:D
By now, she recognizes the N54 page, but to her it's the lesser of two evils.. Being that I'm mostly just dorking out on cards here, versus buying them there. ... "What? BST? Shhhhhhh!"...;) |

I find I'm liking the set even more since we messaged back and forth. I've been looking at a bunch of them on the 'bay, as well as the scans you posted (I've looked at those a few times). I love the different combinations of players. I also like the Mattys you posted. I would just kill for one with Matty on one end, and Walter Johnson on the other (maybe with a Grover Cleveland Alexander windup picture in the middle. Hey, he was in his second year!). Sadly, it doesn't seem any two of those three were paired in any way. My head is spinning. Do I save for a "Cobb steals third", or a Matty dark cap T206 after I get my Walter Johnson portrait. Decisions, decisions... |
