M116 blue background with black back?

Has anyone seen one before? There's a blue background Jennings on eBay that appears to have a black back and I was just curious if that's even possible.

Interesting, I have been "sort of" collecting M116s for a little while, and have around 50 cards. Only one or two have black backs, so the black backs are definitely far less common.

I checked out that ebay auction though and that card definitely has a black back. I haven't been paying a ton of attention, but this is the first time I can remember seeing a blue version of a card with a black back.

I am sure some of the guru's on this board will know the answer to the question though.

hoshua4710, we're only about 20 miles away from each other. Not a lot of pre-war collectors around here, maybe we should meet up some time!

doubtful

Nothing in the research I did for the article on this set suggested that a blue background would go with a black back, and I really don't think this back is black either -- it's just on the darker side of blue. True black backs are really black with no bluish tinting, but this one definitely seems to have a bluish tinge.

BTW, what kind of price is that?? $949 for a VG Jennings??

Tim, that's a different listing, this is the one in question:

Looks black to me! :)

ah-ha!

Thanks, Dave, for getting me to the right Jennings -- I see what you mean, it does look black. Also I can now see how a few cards with that combo could have been produced, in the small window when they were making Series 3 with the black backs, but also still reprinting the blue fronts of Series 1 to accommodate the requests for that series that were still coming in. It's actually very cool!

Did one of you guys win it?

Tim

It's really a black back, from that scan.

I was hesistant to bid on it too, since I thought you might be and I didn't want to bump up the price. But I waited till the very end and there were no bids, so I put one in. I wouldn't have ever seen the auction if you hadn't posted this thread, so if you'd like the card it's all yours, I'll pass it along to you at-cost.

hoshua4710 07-22-2013 01:35 PM

No no no haha its all good! So far as we know this could be an extremely rare card! I'm just happy someone on the board bought it and it wasn't lost back into some random collection and never discovered. I'm sure it'll make for some interesting future threads on this board!

Well, I got the card. The back is blue. So, mystery solved I guess

All I can figure is that the photo on the auction must have been done with a scanner or camera that just didn't pick the color up properly and registered it black, I dunno.

brianp-beme 07-28-2013 07:46 PM

Oh well...still a nice looking card for the price.

Brian

Agreed, I still think it was a pretty good deal for a blue background. The add said that they weren't sure if it was trimmed or not, what do you think?

Really tough to tell. I agree with the ebay seller, if it is slightly trimmed, it was probably a vintage trim. But looking at the card in person, I really don't think it's trimmed.

Now I am at work where I have a scanner, so here's a better scan of the card.

If you want it, let me know. It's yours at-cost :)

timn1 07-29-2013 10:37 AM

Wow.

Dave,
I can't help but feel you got a raw deal, in the sense that you thought you had something unique. It is a nice card and a good buy nonetheless. Bring it along anyway!

Tim
