A 1952 Topps ebay fake to avoid
I've been waiting for the flood of fake Campos with black star variations to arrive. Fortunately, this one isn't even close to legit:

how can you tell this is a fake?

52 Campos
Here are my 4 Campos, regular, black star ( graded SCG card back and close up), what I think is a legit partial black star, and broken front border. Had not seen a partial like the one posted by OP

The black star should be offcenter and you should be able to see the red star underneath it as well.

52 Campos
I do not usually buy graded cards, but did on the 52 Campos black star to have the benefit of someone else's opinion on it. I also bought it from a top dealer. Absent it being graded I would definitely only buy one I could self inspect up close, or from a dealer/seller in whom I had total confidence. If you got this card and upon inspection thought it doctored, what are your odds in getting help from ebay if the seller refuses to refund/take it back ( that is just a question, as I am not a ebay seller)

IMHO, I think there is variability in the "blackness" of the star. In those cards early in the run, the black is centered and pretty much overwhelms the red. As time passes the black gets fainter and more "off-centered" relative to red.

of the three what is rarest
all black partial black broken line any thoughts on printing process? |
Campos
I have seen more black stars than missing borders. Partials are hard to spot in eBay scans. Look for missing border with black star:)

If the broken border is a symptom of the same problem as the partial black star (ink running out or a masking problem) then I would think the broken border is rarer. I have seen partial black stars with full borders, but all the broken borders I have seen have partial black stars, suggesting it is "downstream" of the partial black star process. I would be interested if anyone has seen a broken border WITHOUT a partial black star.

Campos defects/print differences
While I collect variations and what I find to be interesting print defects, unlike several here I know very little about the printing process.
My Campos black star, partial black star and missing border are in post 3 in this thread. Here is the back of the missing border card I have: http://i1267.photobucket.com/albums/...g?t=1395930160 |
Although I have these, they are not mine

okay ...
... fess up.
Who on this board put in the "offer" on the card for $45,000? Cheers, Patrick |
Campos
Not me, I got mine for $ 50 some years back. But I do hope he gets his asking price. It looks like it is listed in Beckett. If PSA or SCD recognizes it it could take off. SCD did have an article that mentioned it sometime back. If they recognized the 61 Fairly , why not this one:)
