19th-century folks -- anyone know what this is?
 

I recently picked this up in an antique shop. It looks like an Old Judge-type pose, but the image is a little bigger in size than OJs, and as you can see it has the words "P. H. Mayo and Brother, Tobacco Co." at the top. It's not part of any Mayo issue I am familiar with (N300, N301).

The player is not identified and the pose does not appear in the Old Judge book. His uniform appears to bear the name "Indianapolis" or "Minneapolis" and I think he bears a pretty good resemblance to Jeremiah Denny, who has OJ cards with Indianapolis. But none of that is conclusive.

The back has an ad for an optician and photographic studio in Albany run by the Meyrowitz Brothers, which I have determined from City directories was active there between 1884 and 1886 at least. Later it appears that at least one of the brothers was in business in NYC, where he died in a train accident in 1902. Whether the Albany store was in business through the 1890s is unclear at this point.

The one thing that seems clear from a close look is that this is a genuine period piece. I would love to know more if anyone can offer anything!

I believe these are related to the "Vermont Find". They're old, just not period. You'll find a bunch of info by searching this site for that find.

That's what scanning through glass does on my scanner. Also it's not a particularly sharp image, like a lot of 19th pieces.

I have already tried searching "Vermont find," because this was found in Vermont, but I get 20 screens of stuff and don't see anything relevant from a quick glance -- any suggestion on a time frame when this was discussed on the boards?

It is unknown, the exact date of creation, but it's widely believed these are 20th century pieces. Many of them are un-cateloged poses.

I believe the one I have is 61-2 of Patsy Cahill. Also, looks similar to the one Tim has.

I obviously cruised right past him when I searched through the OJ book -- eyes aren't what they used to be...

I should have said that my piece measures about 1 5/8 by 2 3/8 (frame is 3 7/8 x 5) so it isn't exactly the same format as the cabinet-sized photos recently sold on ebay.
