Question about 1930's Sun Pictures Packs Recently Opened
 

This morning, I opened two 1930's Sun Picture Photo Packs. I am not sure what year they are from. The packs do not match that shown in the SCD Standard Catalog for 1931. The size of the stuff inside are not consistent with the sizes listed in the SCD, either. If they are not from 1931, I do not know what year they are from. Any ideas? George Washington came out of the pink pack and someone else came out of the yellow pack. Any ideas who this is? I can't make out his name on the bottom, but the numbers to the right seem to be 3738. His name might start with a Y. It is very hard to read.

The pink and yellow packs measure 2 5/16 by 3 5/8 inches. The pink and green cardboard that I found inside each pack measures 2 1/8 by 2 5/16 inches. The glossy white paper inside each packed measures 1 9/16 by 2 3/16 inches. The negatives measures 1 5/8 by 2 1/8 inches.

Here is another unopened pack that might help with the manufacturer....These 2 packs are NOT to size and the colorful one is quite a bit bigger than the other, in real life.

My guess is that it is reversed so that the "Y" you are seeing is the last letter and it is GENE AUTRY (they would sometimes misspell his name Autrey), anyways it seems to work from the photo I can see.

I may be wrong, but I think Gene Autry didn't appear on film until 1934ish?Dave.

I have a few opened packs, nearly the same, but with a company listed, and two different addresses. Mine came with an internal envelope, no pink cardboard bit, similar negatives, and 3-4 pieces of the photo paper.


They're labeled P.F. Kahler, with addresses of I ran across a nice little batch
1450 Monroe st Chicago Ill.
and
1124 Tennessee Ave Dormont, Pgh, Pa.

It's interesting how many names these were issued with. And how many slightly different inner contents.

You got it right it is Autry.

Well you guys are amazing as always! It certainly does look like Gene Autry. I took a quick look at his filmography. His first movie was in 1935, so that puts the date for this negative and pack to 1935 or later.

Any idea what these opened packs of Washington and Autry are worth?

I think they have minimal value. I paid about $15 for my unopened pack.
