July Pickups
 

Figured I would start the July pickups thread with an item that's been on my wantlist for about 12 years or so, and thanks to my dad hitting an estate auction early yesterday morning, my long hunt is over. It is a 1960 Black Faced Philadelphia Eagles nodder. I will probably never pick one up, but an Eagles Promo is the last nodder to cross of the want list.

Hopefully the estate sale brought it in cheaper then if it was done in hobby circles like a card show or auction house.

Thanks guys; I was very excited to cross that one off the want list.

I found this 1905 Hires scorer at a flea market over the weekend. I really like the graphic as the mouth and eyes are different depending on the score and number of outs.

Alan, Nice pick up...That's the hires soda jerk guy...He's in my Hires sign above...Seems like there is some story behind him...Something about they stopped using him in ads at some point for some reason...As I recall there's some pretty serious Hires collectors...Your scorer is probably super rare.

You were probably pretty happy to find it...can you relate any the details of bagging it..can you say the flea?

but in the top 3/4 of the most sought after celluloid scorers. I have come across 7/8 in the 10+ years I've had a passing interest - but typically NOT in the sports arena. My friend Glenn Mechanic sold one at last year's national. Funny story is that I know of someone who ONLY collects scorers of this type and perhaps some of the paper ones. He comes to the national every year to try and find ones he doesn't have (like a couple maybe?). To begin with only 2 or 3 dealers might even have a scorer at their table - he has nearly all of them - it must be quite frustrating to collect but a single thing of which there are so few elements to the "set" and have a desire so strong as to go to an expensive show year after year and adding NOTHING. We joke about it. I have seen him there every year I've been to the national over the past 15+ years.............

Carlton - I saw that huge sign on your site - it's SPECTACULAR! I was chasing a similar large die-cut piece featuring Fatima and a canoe for years without success. One could build a world class collection around that as a centerpiece. You have a lot of super pieces and I always appreciate hearing/reading of your travels and acquisitions. I'll post my double old mill country store die-cuts later - not on the level of yours but I still like it.
As for the hires scorer - one that has a collector friendly surface (celluloid advertising collectors are VERY particular about surface wear of any kind - other collectors not so much) would probably be in the 275. - 350. realm. One in lesser condition can be had for less :-)

It's a cool and under-appreciated segment of the hobby... Here are a few of mine (some extremely rare, some not so much...)

one of the toughest - I went to sell mine last year - changed my mind and figure I'm just keeping it as part of my small collection. Your catcher figural pretty tough - the rest can be found more easily = think I've seen the Keith's more than any other - probably because most of the others are paper. Still thinking of picking-up the earliest official umpire style one - it's the one with the 5 balls and four strikes - or am I a bit off (NOT personally - already noted)?

but I never get to show this anywhere so I'm taking advantage on the heels of Carlton's advertising piece. Of special note is 1) the picture sucks - 2) salesman carrying an OM satchel, every person is smoking, cases on the wagon, and a spirited game of horseshoes.......... My only regret is the framing which is the way it was when I bought the piece. Over the years I've wanted to upgrade the visual appeal but just can't figure out what to do with the two different sized/themed somewhat clunky elements and have enjoyed it as it is. Not cheap to do these things right and the money for now better spent on finishing my N184 Kimball master set.

Carlton, I found it at the Grafton MA flea market. It is not one I normally frequent, as my usual flea market is in NH. However, this one is fairly close to my house. I also bought it fairly late in the day (around 11am) which is unusual for me (I am usually done by 7:30-8ish). I bought it from an ephemera dealer who finds things in scrapbooks and box lots of paper. I paid 30.00 for it. Also, amazing sign!

Mark, the ones you show are incredible! I really like the detail on the catcher.

Henry, I too would love to have the 4 strikes one. In fact, I check every scorer I run across while antiquing to ensure it is not that version. Thank you again for your information (and that is an incredible die cut!).

Yes..... the Catcher Scorer is the coolest of the bunch (IMHO). I personally think it's rarer than the Rambler Car.... but close. This is only the third one I've seen in 20 years or so... one was in Halper, and one on ebay 4-5 years ago. I think I have seen at least 5-6 of the Rambler over the years.

The Rambler is also pretty cool on the reverse side, as it has very early mascot images of the Cubs and White Sox. The lousy pic does not do these justice, as it is blurry and low-def. They are really colorful, detailed and gorgeous in person.

Can't wait to see some more faces on the Hires Guy!

I sold a catcher on eBay 5/6 years ago but it might have been a few years earlier than that :-) . I'd say they are close in scarcity but it's a minor point as there're aren't many to be found. The Hires quite tough as well. I think I remember there might be a Zeno Gum one? CRS can be deadly to a completist = fortunately I've moved on so not as much of a problem - I'll have to do a little sleuthing..........

According to this link from a Mears auction he was the medical caretaker for Cobb near the end of his life. My photo is supposed to be from Cobb's personal collection, and given the date of the publication shown it was taken in his playing days. He was also a pall bearer at his funeral.

1880Nonsports - I've really been enjoying your posts - both information and this Old Mill item. A beauty. Also love that middle bill Dickey photo with that shadow over his eyes.

Picked up this El Principe de Gales Havana Cigars sign. It was in a frame. I took it out it is very thick. Has Meek Co on the bottom. Anyone know anything about a sign like this? Also picked up some Helmar envelopes.

Not sports, but I won this General William Tecumseh Sherman signed CDV. It's not in the best shape but man, I'm excited to own a piece of American History like this.

But 2010 rookie game used bat by justin smoak. Bat is mlb hologramed and photo matched to being used to hit his FIRST CAREER HIT AND 1st CAREER HOMERUN.

I don’t normally make such purchases but I couldn’t resist picking up these two original March 14, 1910 Bain images of Myrtle Rowe. I have seen both of them in books and in documentaries but had never seen original versions until these arrived today. I did a bit of research and found this fun newspaper article on Myrtle Rowe that I thought I would share. The photo of her hitting is mounted to a piece cardboard stamped Culver. The other has the Bain stamping with the above mentioned date. I would like to remove the mount but don’t want to risk damaging the picture. Has anyone here ever successfully removed such a photo from a mount like this?

My first MLB flannel!! Vern Stephens, from 1948-52. No apparent alterations. This thing is HUGE! I put an XL t-shirt on top of it to show relative size. I'm only 5'8", but he was listed 5'10", and when I hold this up to my shoulders, it reaches my knees.

Junior Stephens is one of my all time favorite players. Nice pickup Ken.

This 1905 Wichita score card is my oldest program. Very pleased to add it to my collection. One of the guys featured won 32 games this year.
