JULY Pickups
3 Attachment(s)
I will start this month off with a great piece I got in this week. Not baseball, but a must for most autograph collectors. Neat, vintage NASA photo inscribed and signed by Neil Armstrong. I love the classic look of the ballpoint auto on the photo, representing the beginning of the NASA space program. Also, nice that the inscription "Apollo 11" was added...And there is bound to be a "James" out there who will need it -)
|
Nice. Has it arrived from Sweden? (And are you an ATP?)
|
Yes, it arrived from Sweden quite fast actually. The seller was very prompt and courteous.
|
Perhaps the most boring autograph of a Hall of Famer...and in black no less. Ugh...

This piece should be here this week. Fantastic image of a 30 year old LBJ during his first term as a US Representative for the Great State of Texas. Beautiful early signature as well. I paid more for this then a typical signed LBJ photo sells for, but due to the uniqueness of the piece, I thought it was worth it. One thing I've FINALLY learned over the years, is not to always get the cheapest example, as often a more expensive example provides better overall value. This will be cracked out of it's frame as soon as it arrives as you can see the frame and mat job have had better days.

So a couple of months ago, my wife and I celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary. My wife learned that the fifth anniversary is the anniversary of wood, so naturally, she had Louisville Slugger make me a bat to commemorate the day. :) On it, she inscribed "Happy 5th Anniversary! - Matthew and Jennifer - April 26, 2013 - You're My Inspiration".. The Last part because our first dance was "You're the Inspiration" by Chicago.
Last night, Chicago played at my hometown's local fireworks show and I wrote an email on Wednesday to the radio station that M.C.'s the event and their promotions director called me on Tuesday. She explained they didn't have the ability for a meet-and-greet or backstage passes, but said they would try their darndest to get the bat back stage. I waited about an hour afterwards and the M.C. came back with my bat, signed by four of the original six members that are still with Chicago :) http://vmedia.rivals.com/uploads/1080/1417388.jpg http://vmedia.rivals.com/uploads/1080/1417389.jpg |
Waiting on these from Mr. Stinson.

Matt, you realize that your wife is going to use that bat on you when you get out of line...the modern day version of the rolling pin. :) Very sweet pickup.
James, nice pickups as well. What's your HOF number up to now? |

Thanks guys... Mike as far as your comment, my wife is short, I'll just be sure to hang it high on the wall :)

My 4-year old son told me yesterday that he wanted another baseball with a player's name on it for his dresser. So I asked him what player's name he wanted on the ball. His answer? "Mickey Mantle, Daddy" |
Yaz

Not sports, but I won this General William Tecumseh Sherman signed CDV. It's not in the best shape but man, I'm excited to own a piece of American History like this.

Monte Pearson and Warren Spahn
2 Attachment(s)
I recently picked up a couple of cool signed pieces of no-hit pitcher fame:
1) Monte Pearson signed 1940 Play Ball card. Monte Pearson threw the 1st Yankee no-hitter at Yankee Stadium in 1938. Thanks to net54's Jim Stinson! 2) Nice signed photo postcard of Warren Spahn. Spahnie threw two no-hitters late in his terrific HOF career, one in 1960 and one in 1962. |

It was very real. They did a brief walk through of the area to know exactly where they were going to be walking but didn't pick out anything or talk prices of anything before started filming.

LOVE IT and would give anything to meet the guys, as said |
Very Cool...love their show...they seem very genuine...i hope that was the case with you!
|
Danielle is in town this weekend too. Unsurprisingly, they all seem like really down to earth people that are simply enjoying the ride.

Not the most exciting auto in the world, but I just picked up this Umpires-signed ball that includes WWI Vet Butch Henline, who died in 1957. It also has Art Passarella and Jocko.

Thought I should add the other Hubbell variation to my HOF signed 'rookie' collection to go along with his follow thru pose
|
Picked up this Duffy Lewis spring training pass. Always loved his signature.

Pretty excited about this one. An official line up card filled out and signed by Lefty O'Doul for a game between the San Francisco Seals and Oakland Oaks on April 20, 1950.

Here are my two recent acquisitions.
Did a trade for some stuff that was nice, but wasn't in the collecting realm for 2 nice items. I'll give a shout out to Brendan (Bpm0014) for a great deal. Honus Wagner Check. The damage to the "J" made it more reasonable to acquire, but it works for me. I plan to mat it like I did the Cobb check. Now down to WaJo and Young to complete the original 5 HOFers. Attachment 108387 Also, picked up a nice clean Stengel on what looks like an autograph album sheet. This one, I'll make available for sale or trade for the right offer, but I might frame it as well. I can't decide as I'm running out of wall space. Attachment 108388 In a separate deal, non sports, I picked up a signed 2112 Rush album that I framed. It's not a great picture. Looks waaay better in person. Attachment 108389 |
Nice pickups Mark. It's said that the mind is the first thing to go, but most of us here know that it's actually wall space that's the first to go. ;)
