Christy Mathewson Type 1 Photo ID?????

Hey all,

Picked this up recently and had a few questions about it. First some facts about the photo: It is 8"X10" and is sepia toned and is glossy.

1) According to the Fogel/Yee book, the stamp on the back definitely puts it between 1915-1920. So my assumption is that since Matty joined the Reds in 1916 and ended in 1918, COULD THIS BE CONSIDERED A TYPE 1 PHOTO???

2) Edd Rousch came over with the trade, and that is him standing next to Matty, however, Matty is holding a glove and it looks like a team lineup before a game, AND Matty only pitched 1 game for the Reds on September 4th, 1916 against Mordecai Brown, SO COULD THIS BE THE PICTURE FROM THAT GAME SINCE HE HAS A GLOVE IN HIS HAND??

3) Lastly, does anyone know who the other player is in the photo??

MANY thanks to all of you, as this board is the best at helping other fellow collectors.

Type 1, yes.

Doubt its from the same game, Matty was a coach/manager and those guys all (except Mack) warmed up the players, and participated in the pre-game warm-ups back then. I bet he has a glove for that reason and probably not because he was pitching that day.

Nice photo, Greg.

I don't know who the fella on the left is, but it's most certainly from the Polo Grounds. Since Edd Roush is in the photo as well, and he also went to the Reds from New York, perhaps it's from Cincy's first trip back to the Polo Grounds in late July of 1916? Just a thought.

But assuredly, it IS the Polo Grounds.

Could be on the same occasion as this one offered by Legendary in March 2012?

I think the two photos are from the same day. Matty's belt is in the same position in both, and the creases in his pant legs just above his knees are virtually identical in the two photos.

Greg,
Great image. What is that black circular mark, just to the left of the file number on the bottom border? I can't make it out.

Curt, it looks like an ink spot, but not sure 100%.

Wild guess, but I just read yesterday that all three were actually traded together to the Reds back in 1916. Verifying that with B-R, the exact date was July 20, 1916.

No idea how you'd verify it, but perhaps this picture is their first appearance in Reds unis after that trade.

Cool photo, either way.

Richard.

Greg,
That is a great pic. I hope you enjoy it.
I certainly will enjoy what I got in the deal.
Perfect win-win deal.
What I got is in the Auto pick ups thread and the framing and matting thread I started, if anyone's interested.
Best,
Mark
