|
I'm interested!
I'm interested.............But I'd never be able to afford it!:(
I think it will be around $48,000 with the juice. |
my guess is 75 000 $
|
in retrospect...i may have been a little high?!?!?!!?
|
ANyone know if this Cobb is new on the market ?
Any past sale on this Cobb? |
nelson...check the REA sale years ago where they had a bunch of them for auction at once.
|
64k I'm going with.
|
I'll say $57k w/o the juice.
|
Very nice card....but since I would never spend over 20 000$ on a card I am out!! I wish I could own it....like I am sure everyone here would!! Thanks for posting the link I will follow it for sure.
Very tempting...
|
This is a 100K+ card.

Cobb back

That sounds like a good price. The card is very valuable, based on rarity, but compared to the condition of other "Cobb" backs, this card is a much lower quality grade "1". Tony |
Won't meet reserve is my guess.
|
I'm always wrong on this kind of stuff....so I'll say $95,000.00:) Dave.
|
$101k
|
I'll say 69K ;) with the BP.
|
|
I'm saying, since there is no such thing as a T206, with a Ty Cobb back, that it gets no bids! I refuse to accept this as part of the T206 set

I'll bet the reserve is at least $75,000, and it won't make the reserve. |
Do we get a T-shirt for guessing the closest? I'll say 72K with the juice.
|
me likesy.....
but can't affordsky:)
i'm going with 90 k plus juice..... thanks for the different view Chris B:) and I agree with Johnny D.....not part of the set, but a beauty.... Barry...+ 1 on the shirt..... Sean or Wonks, would look great with your Planks!;) |
If it goes to $90k I can promise you it won't be me who ends up with it.
|
I'll say $76k
|
I guess I'm high bidder here, I think it goes 6 figures....

Over 86K with time to go!
|
I think it will hit 125-150...
|
GO, COBB, GO!!
Now that it's widely accepted that this card is indeed part of the T206 "set", it will be interesting to see where this baby ends.... What??? ;) |
I heard there will be one at the National, in a 2 holder, with an asking price of 250k. Neat cards but another that has gotten out of my league.....:(
|
250K sounds like an "I really am not interested in selling!" price!!!!

Where is the scan on the left from? Was it from a previous auction? I would be just a tad bit pissed if I bought the card based on the image on left only to receive the card as it looks on the image on the right. |
Goldin auctions does not edit scans in any way.
If the card looked " better" in a different scan, it could only be an edited scan or " bad scanner" I guess, or perhaps a different setting..... Our auction ends Friday Good luck to all |

There seems to be some dispute as to when the Cobb backs were produced. If they were produced in 1910, as seems to be indicated by an ad in a Georgia newspaper, then they could be part of the set. If they were distributed in Cobb tobacco tins that would likely date them to 1912, which would be too late to be T206s. As far as I can tell, the best argument in favor of including them in the set is that Jefferson Burdick put them there back in the '30s. There is no definitive proof either way, so reach your own conclusion. By the way, there are members on this board who know 10x as much as me on this subject, so maybe they can weigh in on the matter, and correct me if I got this wrong. :) |

T206 Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back found in Ty Cobb Tobacco tin Lew Lipset - Old Judge Auction (April 16, 2009) Vintage sportscards pioneer, Lew Lipset, has a T206 Ty Cobb back in his April 2009 Old Judge Auction. He indicates in his auction that he believes T206 Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back were brought to the public in Ty Cobb Tobacco tin and were the only way they were distributed. The following was the auction description: T206 Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back graded Authentic by SGC. One of the most prestigious and rarest cards in the hobby with about a dozen known. Considerably rarer than the legendary T206 Honus Wagner card. This card was originally found in a Ty Cobb Tobacco tin and it is my belief that is the way they were brought to the public, and were the only way they were distributed. The card has tiny spots of paper loss on the front including in the legend area at the bottom. The back has some light tobacco stains and a spot of paper loss beneath the word "World". Final bid (with 10% premium): $51,879 http://www.t206museum.com/photo/per_TyCobb_OJ_ft.jpg http://www.t206museum.com/photo/per_TyCobb_OJ_bk.jpg http://www.t206museum.com/photo/TyCobbTin.jpg The above Ty Cobb Tobacco Tin image is for reference only. Then i found this info, saying otherwise: Ty Cobb backs are the rarest in existence. There are only a dozen known, and are only seen with Ty Cobb Portrait with Red Background. Due to the low number in existence, some collectors are curious whether the card was actually issued. Some collectors don't even consider such back as part of the T206 set since all Ty Cobb backs (except one) has glossy coating on the front which are similar to T213-2 Coupon Tobacco series |
strong price so far. nice card.

I also know there will be a nice one for sale in 2014 with a major auction house. |
Chris, thank you for the quotes. One more thing to note: Since the Lipset auction there was a Cobb tobacco tin discovered which still had an intact tax stamp. The stamp was dated 1912.
So if the Cobb/Cobb backs were indeed distributed in the tins, this would place them in 1912, too late to be included in the T206 set. Not like it really matters much, though. However we catagorize the card, it is still one of the most valuable in the hobby. :) |

I think this makes a pretty solid statement for the card.

I don't think that the Cobb back should be considered part of the T206 set. With the glossy front, brown player and team ink, and the layout of the back, I would say that it is closer to the T213-1 Coupon series. Just one guy's opinion though... |

Sarno nice call, you indeed know the market!

And to think, I was offered one for $20K 8-9 years ago! (I had to pass on it)

48K, 57K, 64K (two people), 69K, 72K, 75K, 76K, 80K, 90K, 95K, 100+K, 101K and, of course, two very nice endorsements that it "won't meet reserve." Then, after the card sells for $120K, the comment is made that it is a pretty strong statement about the card. While this was indeed a high-end card, I think people may be overlooking the fact that a lot of the credit for reaching that level should go to the Goldin Auctions people, especially Ken. Specifically: 1) The fact that this same card sold for $120,000 versus $80,000 only a year ago is no small feat. 2) I think the hobby took comfort in the fact that Goldin only shows true, un-edited and non-photoshopped scans of trading cards. As shown on this thread, feel free to look at the scans of the card we sold compared to last time the same card was presented to the hobby. 3) I believe the fact that Ken is pretty much the biggest promoter in the industry, the fact that the card was on TV, the image of the card was on a banner ad on every major hobby website, in every ad, including many non-hobby ads that are read by wall street types, and in emails to over 200,000 people were key variables to it selling at that the price it did. Please understand I do realize that many on this board have long-term alliances with certain auction houses and Goldin Auctions is one of the newer houses on the block. However, at this point, if you have a high value item that can use national exposure and you want to get bids from non-hobby players, I believe you are possibly shooting yourself in the foot by not consigning to Goldin. Further, if you are beginning to realize that Goldin Auctions will likely get you the most money for your item but you don't want anyone to know you consigned with us, please feel free to contact me at Chris@goldinauctions.com and you can consign to us in secret. |
