W575-1- Service Candy Company- Alameda California
 

I know this is a shot in the dark, and I think I might have asked this before but don't remember (for sure) what the answer was. Picked this card up several months ago. As we all know there are a ton of W575-1 type cards with different stamps and printing on the backs. Personally, I categorize them the way Burdick did with the general classification of W575. From a bit of searching it looks like Service Candy Company was started in 1934 though I am not sure where? They moved to Montana in 1957. Has anyone seen any other cards like this with a similar stamp? It looks like the phone number on the back is ALA. 2785-W ......

I have one, Leon. The player is Charles Hollacher. Up until today, mine was the only one I'd ever seen.

The Service Candy company is somehow related to Henry Johnson Confectioners, as the Alameda 2785 phone number was also the phone number of the Henry Johnson Wholesale Confectioners company.

Additionally, although virtually ALL the Henry Johnson back stamps are purple on these blank-backed E121s ( :D ), I have acquired three with green back stamps and the Henry Johnson Confectioners company names. They are certainly authentic, but use a typeface that is different from the traditional Henry Johnson stamp but similar to the Service Candy.

I've had these four cards for a couple of years now, and had come up with the hypothesis that Service Candy was a retail brand name of the candy produced by Henry Johnson. I have absolutely no proof of this, it's just a hypothesis.

BTW, your Service Candy stamp is even darker and easier to read than mine.

Was that at some point in the Nagy collection? He used to write that kind of notation on the top of the back of a card.

No idea.....got it off of ebay from a seller I wasn't familiar with..

Interesting that you have one too. I wouldn't have imagined these were done to deceive as they have little extra value with the stamp but it's nice to confirm another one. As for it being the name of a product, I don't know, but it's a good guess, except the "CO" at the end of the name on mine precludes me from that notion. I think the Service Candy Co. might have just bought some of these strip cards and stamped them as advertisements for their company. One of these days I bet we find out the real scoop. I am just glad there are so many questions yet to answer in our hobby.

I'm not so sure Al would agree they're strip cards. I think they're blank E121-80s that have been stamped.

I didn't say he agreed. Al stated that they are E121s...no worries. I mainly go by what Burdick did but to each their own...
