Net54baseball Dinner at the National.....2013

As we get closer to the National I want to let folks know a few specifics on the Net54baseball Dinner at the 2013 National. Our primary sponsor is Heritage Auctions. I want to give a big shout out to them. Without Chris I. stepping up a few months ago we might not be having it. Goldin Auctions is also helping sponsor it this year, as well as there is an anonymous donor again.

It will be held on Friday, 8/2/2013 at the Hyatt Regency O'hare, which is right across the street from the Convention Center. It will start at 6:30pm and go until around 12am. This year there is going to be a non-mandatory donation of $5 upon entry. That money, 100% of it, is going to a local facility for abused dogs. If you can afford a few bucks more, the doggies will appreciate it. Again, it is not mandatory and no one will give you an evil eye if you don't donate. I have to say, I despise the way these "donations" have been done at other hobby venues. If you don't donate they make you feel like a leper. At any rate, that is my payback for doing the dinner.... I love doggies.

There will be an RSVP thread the first week in July and that is when everyone can RSVP. You can do it now but it will fall on deaf ears and won't count. All members, family etc... are invited. The only requirement will be that you have to wear a nametag. This year there will be 2 members at a desk filling out the nametags for folks. I think that is the only way to get some consistency. User ID's will also be on a nametag, either the original tag or a separate one. No one is forcing anyone to wear a nametag, only if you want to come to the dinner will it be required. There will be an open bar the whole time and free food.

The way I can help sponsor this is through the email blasts and advertising on the board. I wish to thank everyone for putting up with those few things....And if you opted out of the emails, well, thanks for nothing. :)

+1 on what Alan said. A great time! Especially when Tim Kindler does his "Slapshot" quotes!

Best,

but seriously, the menu will be put out on the RSVP thread. It will probably be the same as the last 2 yrs. I think there were chicken fingers, some kind of beef sliders (I think), cheese nachos... a cheese tray...etc...

ullmandds 06-10-2013 05:28 PM

I believe this year is lobster and porterhouse steaks...no vegetarian option so if you are...you'll want to brown bag it.

What are we going to eat? We'll eat what every Canadian eats - moose meat, bear, whatever we can hunt down when we leave our igloos. If all else fails there's always bacon, eh! Oh and Tim Hortons coffee. :D

Dinner

What kind of dog do you have Leon? I have a yorkie that has turned into a porkie but a cute and faithful little dog.

Tim Kindler 06-10-2013 07:51 PM

Best Part of the National!

Yes, the best part of the National is the Net 54 Dinner. It has been great to meet fellow board members and put names with faces over the past few years. I'm not the most outgoing guy in the world, so my goal this year is to be a little more cordial and introduce and meet many board members that I haven't met before. Of course, I can't wait to catch up with some of you that I have already met. As Andy said (Hey Andy! Hope things are well!), if I get going on sports movie quotes it helps me to open up a little bit. Thanks to the sponsors and Leon who put on a great, relaxing dinner each year. It is such a fantastic time. Last year I was fascinated to see a painting from a member, ( Sorry, I never got your name), who just received a painting freshly done by Graig Kreindler. I was in awe of it colors and detail. It was like being a foot away from a museum masterpiece.

I'll be there like the Hanson Brothers with my foil on ready to get it on!

I believe board member Nelson (g_vezina_c55) resides in Canada and Bosox Blair is close enough that he can smell the clean air.

I too have a Porkie, a Pekingese + Yorkie.:)

He's gotten a little heavy, trying to get it down, but he's such a good dog.

We have a mutt that I rescued while running with a pack of dogs in east Texas, and was starving when we got her. She is about 40 lbs, brindle in color, and is probably part boxer, part pointer, part a few others.....She sleeps under my arm every night. Then we have a miniature beagle that is not miniature in width. She is like the other doggies mentioned, a bit heavy. She can't get up on the bed so sleeps at the foot of it. Dogs are great. I always said if I had Bill Gates money I would put a stop to the over population in the US.....and not let them be euthanized for no reason except idiot people. Ok, off my soap box. This is the 1st yr of a donation and I think it will really help a local abused-abandoned animal/dog non profit.....

Not sure if I am going to be able to make it to the National this year, but I will donate to the charity either way. I hope others will do the same.

We rescued this Daschund/Terrier mix about 7 years ago after she was abandoned by her owners as a puppy. Her name is Wrigley. She was named after my wife's favorite baseball stadium. We would have named her after my team's stadium, but Great American Ballpark doesn't have the same ring to it.

Looking forward to my 1st Net54 dinner. Good idea to help those that can't help themselves Leon!

My wife rescued Jack from going to the pound at only a few weeks old with the idea of finding him a good home...that she did. He's 13 now and loves a good party and a break from his 5 rescued feline siblings!

queencitysportscards 06-17-2013 10:25 PM

I look forward to meeting members of the board and making an introduction.

Thank you to all the sponsors and Leon for organizing this event.

I always said I'd never have a small, yappy dog...This is Daisy, a small, yappy dog....she's a mix of everything small and yappy.....someone left her off in the neighborhood several years ago, she was just a puppy weighing about 9 pounds. She managed to survive for several months, really amazing that she didn't end up as a coyote snack. Daughter Christine befriended her, she was a great family pet. Rescues make wonderful family pets.

Don't eeeeven say Pup-aroni around my house. My doggies ears perk up and their tails start wagging. We almost always have a bag of them in the house. I give Pup-aronis to them almost every day.

and Frank- that canned food is the same kind I get for my doggies...mixed with some hard food too

It's awesome you guys are doing this. I wish I could go, but traveling long distances right now is out of the question.

As to the non-mandatory $5 donation for abused dogs, can I please still do this even though I won't be there? I love animals (dogs most of all), and I'm a long time supporter of the ASPCA. Whenever I see an animal suffering, it breaks my heart. So, I'd like to chip in for a good cause. Leon, if you'll just shoot me a PM with where I can send the money once you guys are ready to go (or email me), I can send some Paypal to the cause.

Here's my doggie, Brewster. He's a 4 year old black labby, and the third one I've had (Mitzvah and Shadow, his cousins in that big kennel in the sky), as well as a cocker spaniel named Bowser (my first dog):

Doing his best "devil dog" impression. :D

My sweet boy on the lookout for bunnies. He goes ape shit whenever one enters "his" front yard, and let me tell you, this dog can jump.

Hi Leon, everyone, really a good cause. This is Flynn my Lurcher and Joe my wife's Chiuhauha x Yorkshire Terrier. His best mate!

brightair 06-25-2013 02:45 PM

Can't wait for the net54 dinner. The menu sounds fine, and the $5 couldn't go to a better cause.
My girlfriend likes to remind me of the time I raided the fridge late one night for a snack and next morning she asks me, "What happened to the dog food I put in here?" Maybe I burned out my buds with too much mushrooms back in school, but tasted ok to me!

ullmandds 06-25-2013 02:47 PM

Will all of the T206 freak collectors be in a separate room?:D

atx840 06-25-2013 03:07 PM

Yes...the "HIGH 5" room...guest speaker is Jeff Bezos (amazon.com founder) repeatedly praising us on our brilliant "investment" foresight.

ullmandds 06-25-2013 03:09 PM

nice Chris...I want to be in the "high" 5 room!!!!!:p

Way to go guys!! Helping out the dogs is such a great idea, very cool!!:) I wish I could attend, but Chicago is a little to far for me to travel. I enjoy the Cleveland show when I can. Does a "dinner" take place in Cleveland as well?

Hope everyone has a great time!

Minnie says thank you for helping.

There has been a Net54baseball dinner at about 11 of the last 12 Nationals. Most likely there will be one next year too but it's too early to tell. Gotta get by this one first :). Should be a lot of fun again. We'll have some good speakers again too!!
