Mile High Invoices w/ Shipping Charges??

Did anyone win anything with Mile High last night and, if you did, did the shipping charges seem unsually high?

atx840 06-07-2013 08:30 AM

A company sticking behind its name. Nice.

botn 06-07-2013 08:35 AM

Free market, I guess. It is not eBay where sellers are "encouraged" to ship for a loss.

calvindog 06-07-2013 08:36 AM

Legendary shipping prices: $40 for a $2500 card. Beat that.

But you're banned from them?

I got my invoice and the shipping charges looked about right

I have some friends who bid with them.

If you wanna run with the big dogs . . . . otherwise, stay on the porch! :D

autograf 06-07-2013 09:16 AM

So you dislike them in commentary but like them by proxy......

$52.14 shipping for me on about $2500 but there was some oversized items in there so it was about right. Don't forget about the insurance issue. You can typically count on about $1.00per $100 worth of mdse. I'm sure they have an outside insurance rider to cover that but that seems to be what they're charging. About the same you'd pay if you ship via USPS insured and slightly more than UPS or FDX directly.

p.s. If I add up all those $3-$5 charges on crap on ebay, I get to WAY more than $52.14 on $2500 worth of goods.

No that's "typically" on the high side, I just shipped out a card yesterday, $8 in insurance for almost $2,000 in declared value.

Leon 06-07-2013 09:38 AM

Insurance cost....

Per the USPS website, You must be using a different USPS than I do. It's pretty close to a dollar per hundred.....

2013 rates

$0.01-50.00 $1.95
$50.01-100.00 $2.45
$100.01-200.00 $3.05
$200.01-300.00 $5.10
Per each additional $100 $1.15

.

Clydewally 06-07-2013 09:39 AM

$26.81 on $1,700. If $8 is fair for insurance, that leaves $18 for Fed Ex.

Clydewally 06-07-2013 09:41 AM

Their website indicated that they have stopped using UPS and do Fed Ex only

But a lot of people use USPS for comparisons anyway, I do. There might be a little profit in auction house shipping but I truly don't think it is generally a lot, after they pay all of the expenses associated. And if something looks out of line I usually call and get it worked out. I have won hundreds, if not thousands, of items from auction houses and can't recall not getting full resolution if there was an issue. Obviously I have read about some poor issues on the board but they are the exception, in my mind.

Nope! 25.82 for a 725.00 item. My first phone call lowered it down to 21.00,my next phone call with some what the @@@ and a few more bad words lowered it down to 13.05:D In all the years dealing with them I have always had to call them about the shipping and usually it gets lowered. I also think their computer system factors in the cost of the buyers premium into the insurance price they first give. Talk about getting it at both ends!

Well there must be different rates per location. If I ship priority I get up $500 free insurance. After $500, the rates kick in. I just shipped a card yesterday, $5.95 for priority shipping, $8 for insurance for a total of $13.95 on a card with a declared value of $1995.

bobbyw8469 06-07-2013 10:13 AM

I tried to call them to find out about the shipping charge, and their phone number on their website and on their invoice is disconnected. Does anyone have a good phone number for Mile High?

Earlier this week I shipped 2 raw cards via USPS small priority box w/$1400 insurance, was $23 and change I believe.

autograf 06-07-2013 11:12 AM

You get ZERO insurance with Priority Mail. You get up to $100 free with EXPRESS mail (used to be $500). A one pound Priority Mail pkg is about $6, a one pound EXPRESS mail pkg is about $17-$20. A large difference.......above a certain price to insure, it makes more sense to go registered mail. That used to be about $1200-$1400 or so in declared value. It crosses over there. Then you have more security but it takes quite a bit longer.

NONE of the Priority services on the USPS site offer insurance......
https://www.usps.com/ship/service-chart.htm

From UPS.Com.....a package with declared value [x] you pay [y] for additional insurance....
500.....4.50
1000...9.00
2000...18.00

From FedEx.com....a package with declared value [x] you pay [y] for additional insurance....
500.....4.25
1000...8.50
2000...17.00

Those are retail prices. I'm sure contract accounts get a negotiated rate. Point is, Legendary, REA, et al, don't pay these rates as they have insurance riders that cover loss/theft/fire/etc probably. They charge you these rates to help pay for those insurance riders. Do they make a profit on shipping.....maybe. But I don't think a lot. I know they both do a HIGHLY professional job in packing the goods that they ship and have to pay employees to do that and use first rate packing materials which are not cheap. They're not scrounging up a reused box from an inbound ebay shipment or putting a second label over a bubble envelope and re-sending it.

Phone NUmber

I called the number on their web site and got thogh with no problems:

bobbyw8469 06-07-2013 11:31 AM

That's odd...I called the number and got the generic female operator saying disconnected. Anyway, Mile High contacted me, so I was able to get my questions answered.....

Thanks Tom. You are definitely the shipping expert on the board. I think what you pointed out is just about what I said...basically, a dollar per hundred of value for insurance. And leave my repurposed shipping boxes alone. I am cheap and going green :)..

Griffins 06-07-2013 12:02 PM

Mine seemed about right.

gnaz01 06-07-2013 01:00 PM

REA was free :D

Well said. I never like seeing the shipping charges after the auction (I sort of feel like they should be built into the BP), but I know they are coming outside of REA, and given the values of the things I won, they have struck me a reasonable across AHs. I've never negotiated the price down, but I have gotten several to send to me 2-day delivery instead. I get pretty excited about receiving the items.

Won a $1000. card on Wednesday w/ Goodwin and was charged $7.95 shipping
Won a $100. card last night w/ Mile High and was charged $9.50....Go figure!

autograf 06-07-2013 02:34 PM

I think many of them just set a minimum price on a transaction too. I'd say Goodwin is losing money on that transaction but he makes it up other ways I'm sure. I DO like the REA method. With high buyers premium, it's nice to not have to figure that out. Regardless, it's all a moot point anyway as the stuff trumps the price for most of us [within reason].

Contrary to popular belief, he who dies with the most "stuff" loses!

I'd be more concerned with your hammer price.
