Another passing
Seeing the thread about Ray Hess's death prompts me to alert our fraternity of the passing of another hobby pioneer, Dale Collett, who died May 27 in Bradenton, Fla., at 75.
Dale hosted the first "card show" I ever attended, in a bowling alley in Providence, RI, in the early 70s. I don't know the details, but he was involved in the "find" of material from the Goudey files in the 60s, had a connection with the Balfour Co. in nearby Attleboro, MA, that brought many World Series press pins into the hobby (eventually there were some negative aspects to this link -- theft, counterfeiting -- but I don't the extent of Dale's involvement, if any) and the discovery of a pad of at least 100 S81 silks of Christy Mathewson. A devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan, Dale was a friend and mentor to many early New England collectors, myself included. He introduced me to Les Murphy, a contemporary of Burdick, Bray, et al, and my nonsports collection began with the acquisition of the remnants of Les's collection (Dale had siphoned off the sports cards already). Condolences to his widow Priscilla and daughters Rebecca and Pamela. Bob Richardson |
