Generic cards featuring real players
The Marquard/Ruth stamp made me think of this one. Anyone have other examples?

I have one of these I picked up off ebay a while back... Sisler is identified on the back, though.

I think there are a number of other Ruth cards that don't have him listed specifically on the back, but it's pretty much assumed that it's him on the front. Examples include:
1921 Schapira (action shots) 1928 Shonen Kulubu 1929 Churchman 1937 Donut Corp |
Hi-
Who is the Harvard player? I have it, but I always assumed it was a generic player. Alan |
Generic cards featuring real players
I'd say the E91 cards are good examples.

Hey Scott
The most "notable" image in the E91 set is that of Walter Johnson. Not only it does not resemble him, they show him as a Southpaw. However, what is even more mysterious is that (I believe) it is the only E-card of Johnson. Have you figured why that is so ? TED Z |
I don't know Ted, the E91 Johnson looks like a reasonable likeness to me, albeit naive, but we're talking E91 here. Also, Johnson isn't really shown as any paw as his right arm is cut off. I do get your point though, as I've always thought it looked wrong.
Please share re lack of E-issue Walt's. My one and only E91 is Johnson, with a great diamond stamp cut right through the chest. I bought a collection probably 25 years ago now. T, D and E cards, some postcards and a bunch of non-sport cards. Everything had been punched, either with a diamond or a square. Belonged to two brothers and that was their way of knowing which card belonged to which. |

Walter Johnson had a very low era, but a losing record through his first three seasons with the Senators 1907-1909. I think the images for many of the e card sets were already in place by 1909.

Walter's other name was Rube

The Walter Johnson E91 is from the E91C set, which was the third E91 set that was issued in 1911. The image on the Johnson card was originally published in the E91A series in 1908 as Rube Waddell, and the artist used Waddell's facial characteristics in producing the card. Here a couple of Rube's other cards that to me are pretty conclusive that this is actually Rube's face...check out the long nose and flaring nostrils and mouth areas, the distinctive upper lip, the odd stare, the shape and positioning of his ears, even the center part in his hair. In fact I am convinced they used the photo seen in the Colgan Chip issue to create the facial portion of the E91A Waddell card.
I think the producers choose the "Rube" design for Walter for the E91C issue because there are certain resemblances between their faces, but otherwise I consider the E91C of Johnson to be a Waddell imposter. Brian |
WaJo also appears in these "E" sets:

Hey guys I may be a "dinosaur"....but, I'm not "slipping" :) I'm well aware of all those sets. I should have been more specific in referring to the small card Candy sets (1909 - 1914).......... E90-1 ............ E101 E92 ............... E102 E93 ............... E103 E94 ............... E104 E95 ............... E105 E96 ............... E106 E97 E98 So, does anyone here have any theory's as to why Walter Johnson is not featured in any of these sets ? I find this to be very puzzling since Johnson is featured in the 33-card C series (1910) of the E91 set. T-Rex TED |

Here is a game card from 1934 depicting a generic player that looks a lot like Ruth.
