PAYPAL Social Security Number

I wanted to alert our members that last night as I was paying for an ebay item I was high bid on. When going from ebay to the paypal site to pay for it, it would not let me do so until I went to the resolution center, and gave them my social security number...I thought that was strange so I waited until this morning to call them and they verified that I did in fact need to give up my SS #. They also told me this is the start of them going through their records to ensure they have a SS # or Federal ID # from everyone that uses PAYPAL and Ebay... Has this happened to anyone else.

Could this be a way for them to track your amount of buys and sells to see if you reach these limit where they send you a 1099. Could be that your near the limit. I used PayPal three times in the past week and was not asked for my ss # small amounts $20 and under.

Paypal SS #

Hello Mike:
I think you are probably correct, as I do sell a small amount of items on ebay.
Looks like they might be getting ready to start sending 1099's at the end of year. Just was wondering if anyone else might have had this same issue.

What are the limits for buy/sell where they will issue a 1099? Anyone know offhand? :( Dave.

1099s

I believe the limit is $600, at least used to be.

More likely Sales Tax collecting Info !

Morning,

I've hit the 200 transaction and $20K limit with Paypal since it started 3 years ago. I don't see how what you spend has anything to do with Sales other than what YOU DO when you fill out your taxes at the end of the year and do your Business P & L write-offs. Paypal is not going to track that for you as NO vendor would. Unless they are going to report something for Sales Tax purposes.

I've spent about 10K on E-Bay since Jan 1st and this is the first I've heard of this. In MHO this is a test of some sort to start tracking what you are buying to have a record of the Sales Tax you are currently Not Paying, but Congress and Big Retailers want you to pay both On and Off-line!

Just my 2 cents.

Neil

SS#

I think they are jumping the gun. This hasn't been approved by congress as far as I know. If that comes to fruition, I will not give them my number and cease doing business with either one. They will get my social security number from my cold dead hands.
