The Cornerstones of your Collection
Everyone enjoys the opportunity to share their collection, so let's see 'em...what are your favorite or most significant pieces in your collection?
Please limit 4 pieces per person. |
Can't wait to see what everyone posts...
I need to do some scanning, and take a picture. My two favorite items are my 54 Topps set and my framed Harmon Killebrew collection of all his cards displayed in my house. Here is the "Big 3" Rookies from my 54s... http://i.onfinite.com/cpvT6wY8d.jpg Outside of set collecting, I also collect Mantle's like most here, although mostly raw and only a couple left of his base cards. Here is my favorite, the 57. Researching my 52 Topps purchase daily, can't wait to post that... http://i.onfinite.com/hFhnwSL8d.jpg |
Really nice Aaron RC, John.

Jeff, that's an amazing Aaron. It is certainly one of the nicer examples I have seen. I own one as well but mine is no where near as pretty as yours.
I have very little focus and an extremely eclectic approach to collecting. As a result I find it difficult to contribute to these types of threads. My baseball collection is all over the place. I collect autographs, original photos, game used items, stadium pieces, baseball advertising, pre-war/post war cards, and memorabilia. Although I have quite a few cards, if limited to four selections, my favorite items (cornerstones) would not likely be cards. It would be easier to identify my four favorite items from each genre. Otherwise such a task is like asking me to pick my favorite child. |
Great cards, all. Love the '54s!
My post-war cornerstone would be... http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...lliams%20B.jpg |
Not my most valuable '52, but my favorite. Iconic pose, mind blowing colors, pure unadulterated Americana.

Corner Stones
Everyone has seen my favorite Mantles by now. Here are three (ignore the Ruth) of the other cornerstones of my collection:

Well, you've said 4 so here they are...

Interestingly enough this card probably has appreciated more in value than any of my vintage... http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...sby-young-guns |
Cornerstone
Since I am a set collector I really don't have just one card to show....but I appreciate seeing all of the cards guys.
Patrick I have always enjoyed the '56 Topps Mantle. Did you ever notice the guy in the suit appear on the front of the card twice? The background was duplicated when they made the card. I also believe the ball was moved as well. Nice cards... |

The cornerstones of my postwar baseball cards are sentimental rather than valuable. I would not say that they will pry them from my cold, dead fingers, but would say that a market value offer would not be close to what it would take for me to sell them.
I pulled this from a pack in 1976. It survived moves around the country, an earthquake and nearly 40 years of life with me: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...76%20Aaron.jpg This is the first vintage card I ever owned. I cannot recall the specifics of its acquisition; I think I got it in an antique store or in a trade around 1974 or 1975. Regardless, I have had it seemingly forever: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...ps%20Dropo.jpg Got these two in an auction at a meeting of the West Coast Card Club around 1979. I had them encapsulated with the goal of selling but could not bring myself to do it: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...bsize/Doby.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...ize/Raschi.jpg |
awesome examples guys...keep 'em coming!

My cornerstone.....my 58 Topps set
Here is my cornerstone.........My 1958 Topps Baseball set

So the rules were pretty easy to understand; Post war and a limit of 4. I won't be greedy, I'll post one.

Sets
Like Zach, as a set collector, it's hard to pick one. My favorite done set is the 68 Topps 3D
|
Keepers
These are three of my keepers, all truth told, I have many more that would be really hard to pry from my collection.

I don't have any high end cards in my collection, but I do have favorites. And these four fit the point of this thread.
My Kaline RC is the cornerstone of my current post war collection. And then my 59 Mantle would be my favorite Mantle in my collection. I really love the 1968 Atlantic Oil set so I picked my Clemente from that set. And lastly would be my signed 1970 Aaron. I've had that card as long as I can remember. Thanks, AndyH . |
Matt - I haven't seen that '60 Aaron before, what a beauty!
Here are my 4: the first three are pretty self-explanatory but the 4th is special to me because it was the first '74 Laughlin Old-Time Black Star Gem Mint 10 ever graded by PSA. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...A_registry.jpg http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...A_registry.jpg http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...A_registry.jpg http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...A_registry.jpg |

Geez Matt, are you trying to start a new super thread over here ;)

Sometimes I get M@tt Miller and M@tt McC@rthy mixed up because both of their names are Matt M. and they both have great cards. Nice stuff, Matts ;)
...and I dig that BGS gem Ripken Jr., Shawn. |

Great Stuff
So many great cards! I really love looking at everyone's cards. I don't think I will ever get tired of threads like this one. I have never seen some of the Jackie Robinson Bond Bread cards.
Great stuff Guys! |

The gray back Williams variation appears to have a thinner sliver of color which I've only been able to find in a blue/gray color like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1956-TOPPS-B...item27d316ae4e |
Variant color lines in 1956 cards
Many of the 1956 cards have those variant color line differences. I first started noticing them after reading about them in Dick Gilkeson's publication on variations. I picked up a couple of examples for my set but do not know if a full list of all the differences exists

Great selections David, beautiful Satchell Paige!

Thanks Joe!

Thanks everyone - will eventually post my BB set once I get the last card I need - just don't know when that will be lol.
Some excellent cards in this thread to say the least. |

Well, we can't wait till Shaun finds another Jackie Robinson for his set before we post another card (that may be awhile:p). So, in an effort to keep this thread moving I'll post one more nice post war card. One of my favorites.

It wasn't easy but I suppose these would be my favorite post war cards in my collection. I know there are five but the two Aarons are hard to separate.:o For those that care about such things the Clemente is a PSA 5.

Love the image on that Musial!

53 Bowman Color is an awesome Musial card. |
Thanks Shaun and Matt. That's an impressive Robby collection Shaun, and Matt I wish I could afford to purchase high grade cards such as those you posted.
