Need Help With Several Autographs IDs From 1945 Album (Scan Heavy!!)
All of the autographs are from 1945, which is the date on the album as well as there being several players who only played in the majors in 1945.
Above each photo I will list the one or ones I need help identifying. 4. Bottom one. No clue on this one. http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/y...ps633cccb7.jpg 9. Bottom one. US Navy I get. The rest not so much. http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/y...ps3f52c721.jpg 12. Fourth one down. What the heck is that??? http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/y...ps703fcb55.jpg 15. Last one. May just be a friend of the person who owned the book playing a prank. Thought I'd ask though. Bottom one. http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/y...ps624ce508.jpg Many many thanks for any help you can provide. Tom C |
6 is Wally Signer or Walter Signer, he went by both names. Played in the minors during the 1930's then pitched for the semi-pro Bushwicks for years. WWII gave him a fresh shot at the bigs and he played with the 43 and 45 Cubs between playing again with the Bushwicks.

11 is Harland Clift. 3 is Tommy Holmes. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 |
#8 Looks like Greek George.
|
#13 Sandy Ullrich?
|
#14 Bo-Bo Newsom (Buck Newsom)
|
Page 13 is from the 1945 Detroit Tigers. This is the only year that Bob Maier played in the majors. I found the other guys on the sheet were on the same team, but I didn't find any players whose name could look like that. There were only 2 guys on the team whose name started with "S"..Skeeter Webb and Stubby Overmire. That sig doesn't look like it could spell either, but I am not familiar with either's signature.

First page, #4 is Bynum Saam, voice of the Phils and A's.

Thank you everyone! This forum is just such a treasure trove of knowledge because of all of you.
I will edit my original post tomorrow to take the known items out. Never in a million years would I have gotten the Phillies/A's broadcaster. Unreal. Tom C |
"By" the way (no pun intended), By Samm's autograph was actually a really fast seller when I had him single signed on an album page a few months back. I think it sold for about $100 right away if I remember correctly, maybe even a little more.

Believe #5 is Cincinnati's Steve Mesner (last game September 1945)
|
#8 may be Greek George. Great album. Sorry missed earlier entry, agree with Greek George.
#2 may be Lee E. Singleton. #7 may be Bill Nagel |

#5 - Steve Mesner??

# 4 is Debs Garms who broke up Johnny Vander Meer's consecutive no-hit inning streak. He also won a NL batting crown.

Thanks
Thanks again everyone!! The field has been shrunk to 4.
4. 9. 12. 15. I have a feeling that #15 was a kid who wanted to get in on the major league action but am not sure. Tom C |

I believe the bottom of 4 is Jimmy Wasdell. He played on the 1940 Dodgers with Whit Wyatt who's signed above him.

I believe you have this correct that this is Jimmy Wasdell. |
Tom,
#15 "JW Derby"? Going on your assumption this was a child's signature, and not saying it is the case, but here is an interesting 1940 census entry. This African American boy would have been 11 in 1945. Probably not the signer, but raises some interesting questions.... http://www.ancestry.com/1940-census/...W-Derby_46xjjw |
