looks like a premium from a newspaper or magazine...nice...looks authentic...and probably worth 500-1000 i'd guess.

bcookie 05-16-2013 03:20 PM

ok... that is what i was thinking about being a premium.. i have been trying to find another example but have not been able to..

The Illustrated Current News had a similar premium but I don't think that is the exact one.

Yes, you did. I didn't see what it sold for, but I like it.

Yep.. It ended today for $330 and change.. I won it.. I bought it thinking it was good but honestly not knowing anything about it...

JeremyW 05-16-2013 04:56 PM

It would look good framed.

The copyright is 1915 on the photo.. Do you think it was issued in 1915 or 1916?

scooter729 05-16-2013 06:38 PM

I was bidding as well - was the second underbidder and would've gone higher had but wasn't exactly sure what it was. The condition made it tough with newspaper clippings glued to the back.

I would say on a whole you got a nice piece at a fair price - enjoy!

Mine is from a 1916 Spalding guide, Basicly the same pic, except ruth isnt smiling and Spalding added numbers to match up the names. Also the trainer dosnt have a cigar and the dog is looking a diff way. Probably snaped 2 or more pics while they were posing (or 2 or more magazines or camera guys from different companies were there at same time <- probably the case )and different vairations were used in diff places.

as mentioned a couple of posts up, this piece does have newspaper clippings that refer to the original owner pasted to the back.. do you think it would be possible to remove the newspaper.. or just trim it up and keep as is?

bcookie 05-17-2013 11:00 AM

The value estimate of $500 - $1000.. Do you think that is correct?

ullmandds 05-17-2013 11:29 AM

The original one posted by the thread starter Looks machine cut to me Whereas the other one that evil king Posted is cut from a magazine... i would have to think that the machine cut Insert would be more valuable. I was somewhat guessing at my estimate But I kind a remember similar items selling in the $4-$600 range the year or so ago.

yea mine came from a 1916 spalding baseball guide

There were 5 bidders between $300 and the selling price of $338, so when you get a cluster like that all around the final price, I think that's a good indicator that the ending price was fair to both buyer and seller.

I think the supplement is worth getting professionally fixed up, matted and framed. It's a special and clearly rare item, and I think it will eventually sell for more than you paid.

Newspaper and magazine supplements don't have a lot of demand in the hobby, but few depict the 1915 Red Sox.

Here is one of my fav pieces - 1914 Balt Int team http://n.b5z.net/i/u/6141290/i/ruthML__2_.jpg

The 1915 postcard in the REA auction is at $22,500.. Would such a strong sale price on the post card make this piece more valuable in the future?..

How many of these premiums do you think are in the hobby?

bcookie 05-27-2013 04:51 PM

I hate to bring this thread up again but i am wondering if anyone would like this piece? My wife broke her wrist over the weekend and i need the money more than the picture.. If anyone is interested. I am just looking for $400 via paypal gift.
