Questions Answered - Thank you

Hello all....

Very nice forum that you have.

I have been collecting cards for over twenty five years and am addicted much like yourselves. I recently came across seventeen N172 Old Judge cards and one N175 Gypsy Queen card from an elderly woman that inherited them from a member of her family over 23 years ago. There is no doubt, these cards are authentic.

I need some help in finding out what I might have. I have done a lot of research and have a vintage sports collectible friend that will be working with me on these cards as well. I always value many opinions.

The one card that has me puzzled is an N172 Stump Weidman card. According to cardtarget.com, the card number is 483-1 with the same pose of this card. However, this card has the last name misspelled as Weichman, also states New Yorks, instead of Detroits and has him wearing a Detroits jersey. From what I have found, Weidman played nine years from 1880 to 1888. Played for Detriots from 1881 to 1885 and 1887, played for the New York Metropolitans in 1887 and played for the New York Giants from 1887 to 1888. Three different teams in the same year, which could explain the variations in the card. With him not playing in 1886, this has to be an 1887 card.

I cannot find a match to this card or any other additional information with the same details of this card. Unfortunately it is not in the best of shape, but it has me very curious for some reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The scan of the card is through a soft sleeve and a top loader. I can remove the card and scan again, if needed.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Ted

What a card indeed! I'm on the road, away from my resources, but can maybe shed some light on the situation. Love when threads like this pop up on the forum. Wiedman's 1888 cards are with NY but are more difficult to find than his 1887 cards with Detroit. What is new to me is the misspelled variation. Strangely, many of the misspelled cards originate from 1888. That is a neat card that I and I'm sure many others would love to have in our collections. Congratulations!

Joe,

Thank you for your quick response and wording. If and when you have the time, please take a look at any resources that you have and let me know what you come up with. I am curious to find out what you or any others can do to help with any information.

There likely isn't much more I'll be able to share. The NY version of his cards are known in both cabinet and N172 form (all 1888 cards). There are a couple surviving original glass plate negatives of Weidman as well in which NY is noted as his team on a piece of tape near the negatives edge (including this pose). The mis-spelling is new to me and that is part of what makes this card special. There are many examples of unique or very rare card variations that do not command a premium but when a misspelling is part of the mix the card becomes more interesting.

Can't shed any light on it for you, but welcome to net54. Great cards...get them graded! Dave.:)

Thanks again Joe.

Would you happen to know if this is a Metropolitan card or a Giants card? With him being dealt from the Metropolitan's to the Giants, in 1887, I would have to think this is a Metropolitan card, since his jersey is still a Detroits jersey and he was dealt from Detroits to New Yorks in the same year.....which is what makes me think this is an 1887 card.

This is an 1888 card. Both Fa (the format of this card) and Fb cards are 1888 issues. I think this is a NY Giant card since Weidman both finished the 1887 season and began the 1888 season with the Giants. Neat card, thanks for posting!

oldjudge,

Thank you for your response. The only thing that makes me question this is the Detroits jersey that he is wearing. Do all of the 1888 cards have him in the same jersey while playing for the Giants? Are there any other items that show him in the Detroits jersey while playing for the Mets? I'm not sure why I need to know this, but for some reason it has my mind thinking.

I know you are an expert on these cards, so please don't feel that I am questioning your judgement. It is only a thought.

And, I thought I had all the poses for Weidman(Detroit). :(
