Coupon question
Hi, I was watching and bidding on some Type 2 Coupons on ebay. Most of them sold, as I expected, in the $25 to $35 range. I had the high bid on the Wiltse, at $31 with a few seconds to go. I couldn't believe it when it closed at $124.72.
Is there something I am missing or is it just 2 bidders shooting it out for a card they need? Thanks, Rick http://www.ebay.com/itm/1914-1916-T2...vip=true&rt=nc |
T213-2 Wiltse Portrait
Hi, Rick,
I was the high bidder on the T213-2 Wiltse portrait New Jersey. All the Wiltse port designations have very low pops. Rob |

Jersey City variation. (Not N.Y or Memphis)

Wiltse variations
Hi, Jeremy,
I believe Hooks Wiltse has 6 cards in T213-2. Two poses, Pitching and Portrait, and three team designations each, New York, Brooklyn, Jersey City. From baseball-reference.com Wiltse played for NYG in 1914 and Brooklyn and Jersey City in 1915. Wiltse has 6 possible cards and 35 total graded on sgc (which does not split out the designations on their pop report) PSA has Pitching JC 1 NYG 0 Brooklyn 0 Portrait JC 1 NYG 1 Brooklyn 0 Bridwell has 1 pose and two designations St. Louis and Nashville. Psa 5 St. Louis 2 Nashville. SGC 25 total Bridwell. Bridwell Nashville is much more difficult than the St. Louis. Red Ames PSA Cincy 2 St. Louis 0 SGC 22 total. Ames Cincy is much easier. In the case of Wiltse, I have not seen it with Memphis, maybe you were thinking of a different card, or maybe you have a very rare card. Most T213-2 have an easier team designation and a harder designation. In Wiltse's case, I believe Brooklyn is more difficult, but I have found all 6 Wiltse's difficult if you are waiting for a specific combination to come up for sale. cheers Rob |
Thanks!
Thanks, I appreciate the info. Not much info out there on Coupons.

Why does SMR not cover T213 in their price guide either in print or online? While not quite as popular nor as common as T206 it does still seem to attract attention as a set. It is odd the set is not even mentioned in the guide.

T213-2
Everyone had good points about the T213-2's...
The T213-2 Wiltse portrait Jersey City went higher than usual because two bidders really wanted to buy it. The team designation made a difference because either the underbidder needed it for the set, or needed it for a regional collection (Jersey). The set is not tracked, or not tracked properly by grading companies and price watch reports. ---------------------- I use the Lipset encyclopedia checklist and the Lemke SCD checklist for reference. I used to follow this set very closely, but have only recently started to buy these again. I am up to about 50 different. Everyone who collects it knows that it is a very challenging set |
Well, now I don't feel so bad. The OP/underbidder knocked me off. My max bid was, I believe, $30.55 (or $30.33?) I, too, expected it to go off at $30-ish. I wound up winning the Bridwell. I only wanted one because I had none.:)

I did this set. The Brooklyn Wiltse is substantially more difficult than either of the other two teams and if you're a Wiltse collector should probably be purchased on sight regardless of condition. Jersey City is mildly to moderately more difficult than New York.

Coupon Type 2s
Coupon type 1s and type 3s are definitely scarce. It shouldn't go unsaid that there are very few Type 2 complete sets around too...Specific player-team combinations can indeed be very tough. And even though the Cobb Portrait isn't difficult to find, it isn't found in nice condition often.

Those are great cards, Leon.
Here is the Wiltse in question in the first post. It arrived today along with 2 BINs.. Attachment 98617Attachment 98618 |
I never get tired of looking at that Cobb trifecta. Love the relative scarcity to their T206 counterparts. I wish there was more info out there on them as well. I think they are undervalued at this point.
