What do you think of this 1916 Babe Ruth?

I am going to go and check this card out later in the week. After looking on line at the certified ones, It looks close to those. Also, I found a site that compared the fake ones to the real ones, and a lot of things matched up.

Having never held one of these cards, what is the general thickness of these cards? Also, if I look at them through a loupe shoule the ink marks be splotchy? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Doesn't look right
The corners look like they were manufactured instead of true wear

sycks22 05-05-2013 03:47 PM

Looks artificially aged and corners are a little too perfectly rounded.

The corners were another one of my concerns. Thanks for the quick replies.

Can I say again that I love Net54? :D So glad to have you guys around. I'm sure I'll be posting threads like this one pretty often while I still have my "learner's permit", so to speak.

You've got 250 posts, no need for training wheels! :D

Ruth

I agree with Jay & Pete above, those corners look too rounded for normal wear. Also, the back and the front borders look too white, not that typical "cream" color as an original.

As the saying goes, why is a card like that not authenticated? - probabaly because it's not real.

Yeah, that was my first impression, and all my stuff is raw, but if I had a card like that and wanted to sell I'd do it in a holder.

Edited to add: In a screwdown? Since when? C'mon!

It might just be the photo, but it looks like a really good fake, if it is fake. If I had a chance to see it in person, I would, if it wasn't a hassle. I've seen plenty of cards in holders with unnaturally rounded corners... The blue old mill, off the top of my head.

any idea of what type of paper stock these were printed on? I will be going to look at this card next week. Any other things I can look at to make a determination. Here is another card that is for sale.

Tell him to get them authenticated by PSA or SGC. Then make him an offer. I think it's too risky buying them raw. That Cobb has the same rounded corners as the RUth.

Are these the only two cards that are for sale? Any commons? Seems strange that if the only two cards he has are two of the most valuable players from the set. Does he have the Joe Jackson as well?

Just my two cents

They are in a local auction. The auctioneer generally sells old wooden stuff and he knows nothing of the cards. Thanks for all the info.

The Cobb is fake for sure and im 99% sure so is the Ruth. They are very well done reprints. I was involved in a deal for a cobb and when next to a real one there was only small differences, mainly with detail levels and shading. esp under the bat, D logo on jersey, here is a real one-

The Ruth is Fake, the Cobb is fake, and so are the Jackie Robinson, Stan Musial, and Warren Spahn Rookies he has for sale at that auction. I have seen countless fakes circulating small local auctions in Dallas/Ft Worth and East TX. BEWARE. Along with the fakes discussed above, I have seen fake Hank Aaron Rookies, Fake Goudey Ruths, and fake Topps Mantles. Fake Nolan Ryan Rookies, fake Jordan Rookies, and TONS of fake mantle and ted williams autos.

Also, regarding the Ruth, Cobb, Robinson, Musial, and Spahn cards: when an auctioneer is selling baseball cards with a special note saying "No COA, as is, as shown" and nothing else in the auction has that same disclaimer......here's your sign.

These crooks are specifically targeting small auction houses that have no history of selling sports cards. They are also targeting auction houses in small towns outside the city like Farmersville, Bridgeport, etc.
