I was very excited about winning this cabinet photo - you can see by the 'before' photo that it's pretty cool. 11x14, lots of cool pillbox hats.
Unfortunately, the cabinet was placed in a huge bubble-mailer with 1 piece of a priority mail box laying on top of it, then shipped Parcel Post. It didn't have a chance... |

That sucks Scott. Too bad they ruined such a great image. |
Ouch!

Lazy, careless sellers aside; great photo! |

As a seller, I'm vaguely irritated when a customer tells me how to pack and ship their item, but now I think I get it. The seller is a perfectly nice guy - he just doesn't know how to pack and ship fragile items. |

If I figure it out I'll post a pic of the final result. |

when I asked a lady at the post office why she bent a picture I received when it said on it "do not bend", the reply was I didn't bend it there |
Charlie Sheen's Bat from "Eight Men Out". Super excited about it. I don't want to screw up the thread with a link, so after you finish reading this one, head over to the Game-Used Pre-1980 forum. Pics are up.

Some Jim Jeffries material:
Ticket and raincheck from the Jeffries Barn boxing arena here in Burbank: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...n%20ticket.jpg An invitation and two tickets [front and back shown] to a 1941 dinner of the California Boxing Commission honoring Jeffries: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...g%20Dinner.jpg Business card of the manager of Jeffries Barn, G.W. He played in 10 games for the 1912 St. Louis Browns: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...rd%20Aiton.jpg Two newly discovered Jeffries mail reply cards. I'd previously cataloged a card used to respond to mail about his 75th birthday: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...ly%20cards.jpg Jeffries Barn letterhead signed by Aiton: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...letterhead.jpg And a vintage snapshot of Rocky Marciano at training camp: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...apshot%201.jpg |

When I remember to, I send the follow-up messages with packing instructions, leading off with "This probably goes without saying, but just in case, here's how this should be packed:" And on a number of occasions, I've actually gotten a response to the effect of, "Oh, well I usually just pack everything in bubble mailers," or "If you want it packed that way, I'll have to charge you extra for shipping," at which point I pony up the additional shipping cost and pray that the idiot doesn't still manage to screw it up. And when I don't remember to send packing instructions, that's usually when I get a sharp reminder why I started doing that in the first place... Anyway, nice photo, and good luck with the repair work, Scott. |
Thanks Lance - I'm going to start replying like you suggested. I forgot completely about that cabinet debacle, as the 11x17 Wagner portrait arrived this morning. Finally able to tell who the photographer was: R.W. Johnston, the same guy who did the 1909 Pittsburg Panorama tri-fold postcard:

Scott--Wonderboy apparently sold recently--see the link below. If they had the custom-made case and a Redford-signed LOA, that would have to make it the greatest baseball movie prop of all time, right?

I'm fairly sure that there were multiple copies made of 'Wonderboy' - not sure if it was a limited edition made after the movie, or if anyone could order one.

Lefty Grove Burke signed photo?
2 Attachment(s)
Good afternoon Gents,
I just received this in the mail today (purchased from the bay). It is supposed to be an 8x10 George Burke photo (owner told me the Burke stamp is on verso) from the early 30s, signed in black fountain pen. Its been matted and framed in UV glass. The previous owner had made a minor fix as their were a few small holes in the neck region and in the black background, so he utilized some older sepia photos (attached to the back) to make the holes practically un-noticeable. I kinda want to take the photo out to see the Burke stamping on the verso and the fix that the owner made mention of, but likewise don't want to damage the fine framing. Any suggestions? I have seen Burke/Red Sox signed photos of Grove, but this is the first Burke/Athletics one I have seen...whether its Burke or not, I love the photo and signature. |
I would leave it alone, but if you decide to open it up you can easily replace the backing paper later. If it has those springy pieces of metal holding the picture in, be real careful. If nails or those tiny tack-wedges, use something sturdy and flat (I use a screwdriver) to pry the nail away from the picture backing, then grab it with a pair of pliers, twist carefully in place, then pull straight out. Take your time - it's easy enough to drive a tool right through the backing. Good luck.
|
I think I would leave it alone too. Looks great!
|
Thanks for the feedback Scott/Mike...I think I am going to heed your advice and leave it be. Enjoy your weekend!

Finding one of these undamaged has been a real challenge, but this honey presented itself on ebay recently:D

Vendex Baseball Gum Machine
I like to pick up some kind of baseball related vending machine every now and again.
The Vendex Co. - 1 cent Bubble Gum Machine - 1930s. It's about 12" in height. I like the sticker on the machine. As one can deduce - if one was lucky enough to have a "baseball" come out? They won a candy bar!! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps7c775539.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps1b002706.jpg This is my 3rd machine - the others are more like the pedestal mounted type. edit: I found an ad for the machine from back around 1934 - the company sold these machines for 5.95 and 6 for 30 bucks. |
Mayo Tin - 1883
Here's a tin I haven't seen before - it's about twice the size of a cigarette pack - no ruler on me, but about 4x6 and 1.5" deep. Tax stamp on green paper has only the one date - 1883
(Leon - this is the one I called you about yesterday) |

Got these last week. 1927 & 1943 Yankee Stadium photos. i believe they are Type 1, can someone help confirm? thanks!
|
No one's seen this tin design before? ...or it's so common that it's not worth responding too?
|

I think people here tend to get complacent at times.... fickle group. Either that, or everyone has a Friday night date (which somehow I doubt) ;) That's an awesome Tin, and one I haven't seen before. I've seen other Mayo Cut Plug Tins, but not like that.... very impressive, especially with the striking blue color. Nice acquisition! |
Quote:
Thanks, I was hoping it might have been one that held a card, but when I quit searching on 'tin' and went with 'pack', I found that Mayo had card-sized soft packs. Just another area I'm ignorant in. |

Thanks, Scott! yes, they are both bold, crisp, clear and have great contrast.
Nice tin, by the way! |

Scott
your mayo tin is one of at least 7 variations/configurations in tin. Think this is the only variation with paper label. I remember seeing one or two of this style along my journey. Paper label tins are not actively sought by most tin collectors - but they make great go-withs for the sports enthusiast. The one you are showing may be the earliest - would take more thoght and research. It probably predates the football inserts but I'd have to go back to my records. I've not been active lately in researching tin/pack card manufacturers and the associated product - too many other tasks to focus on avoiding...... I know Jon Canfield has done a lot of work on that front. I don't think it's been clarified yet what kind of package the football cards or even the small die-cuts were found in (or even the ns cards) although I remember that one of the tins has been suggested. I KNOW the yum yum baseball cards were found in tins (thanks Jay M.) as well as the later lucky strike NS cards but I can think of few others. Mostly all cards pre and post 1900 were found in slide and shell packs - a few cards were inserted in paper style packages like the Polar Bear but.....? The more I know - the less I know :-( Is the tin factory 1 or 42 as it's hard to see in the scans? The value of your tin would be in the eyes of the owner :-)
never argue with an idiot they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience |

I made a great game used score today at a local estate auction...one of the "kids" in the family was a batboy for the Lincoln Chiefs from 1955-57 and I scored 9 game used bats, two game used baseballs, and two team photos. I talked to the guy about the Chuck Klein bat and he said one of the players was using it, but he doesn't remember who.
|
Thanks Scott. The factory looks like 42 (remains of a 2, and destroyed area just before it)
Dan, you sure seem to find the Nebraska stuff. You must have a museum-quality collection |

Quite a score- congrats! |
What a great find Dan! They would like great displayed together on a wall rack if you have the room.

Picked these up today. I Want to Go to the Ballgame glass lantern slide, John L Sullivan glass lantern slide, Jesse Haines and Clarence Mitchell Centennial Cover, and Jack Johnson and Jess Willard in Cuba postcard. Ballgame slide is pretty but doesn't scan worth a dang.

Kenny, I've had pretty good luck with just placing magic lantern slides on thick white paper or cardstock and just photographing them with a regular camera. May not always work, but for a "no special equipment" method, it usually gives pretty good results. |
Thanks Guys....Lance they are both Johnson balls. Let me know if you still want a photo.
