Great auction! Also really nice to finally have an auction not have extended bidding last 15 hours until the sun comes up.

Let me echo John's sentiments, this was a great auction. My favorite item was the 1887 Pelican's cabinet. The cabinet definitely dates to 1887 as that was the only year that John Ewing, who is pictured, played for the team.
The existence of the two Carroll Ewing cabinets also raise an interesting question. Those photos were shot before the 1887 season began. I have a matching cabinet of Mattimore in a pose that was issued in the 1887 Old Judge set. However, Ewing does not have an 1887 Old Judge card, this despite the fact that apparently Goodwin & Co had available images of him in time to be incorporated into the 1887 set. What prevented his inclusion (His first photographic card is the late 1887 Gypsy Queen)? |
Nice job of research, Jay. Some deals to be had among that huge cabinet find.
Came home to find I had won only one lot, but 1's better than 0. |
