Saturnino Orestes Armas "Minnie" Miņoso Arrieta

If that was my name I could conquer the World. Luckily, I have no desire to do so.
From Wiki: In his 1980 appearance at age 54, Miņoso became the third-oldest player ever to play in the majors, behind Nick Altrock, who pinch-hit in 1933 at the age of 57... Minoso is one of only two players to have made an appearance in a major league game in five decades, the other being Altrock. He might have made it an extra decade, but MLB has no sense of decency. He's 87 years of age right now. Go Minnie! Show them if you got them |
There's a man who never swung at a bad pitch!

Mini was always one of my favorite players

Loved him as a kid...was VERY dissapointed to see this thread, go look at the years I collect currently that he would be in, and discover I only have ONE Minnie card...ONE? I just got done buying his 61 & 64 Topps cards on Ebay...haha. Here is his 57 from my set...great picture...

Don Newcombe told me a great story about Minoso. There was only one restaurant near Vero Beach that would serve the black ballplayers, so all of them went there. Minoso was easily distracted and the game was to get him going and then slip food off his plate until it was gone. Newk said that Minoso got so mad one day that he spit all over his chicken and then challenged the other players to try and take it.
Two of my favorites: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...s%20Minoso.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...n%20Minoso.jpg |
