What is a fair price on a 51 Bowman Mantle SGC 84 (7)?

Just curious?

Would guys prefer having this card over a 52 Topps in a lower grade say a 3 or a 4?

New week!

Zone91 04-22-2013 07:31 PM

No just curious on the opinions here.

jimivintage 04-22-2013 07:32 PM

Expect to pay between $8k and $12k.

That is what I was wondering why such a price range like that? I know some look nicer than others but even then this card seems to be volatile.

HRBAKER 04-22-2013 07:36 PM

I would prefer a top end '52 - 4 over a 7 '51.
I am assuming I would be in the minority.
RC business aside I think the Topps is a better looking card.

My feelings are the same as yours!!!

My personal feeling is that it comes down to centering. Those Mantles are all over the place in terms of centering, so if you can fine one spot on, then expect to pay closer to the $12k price. Just my two cents though! I'll never be in the market for one that high of a grade though! Lol

margoaepi 04-22-2013 07:42 PM

There is also vintagecardprices.com If you have the cash to drop on the cards you have been buying, you can afford the $12 a month.

True!!

T205 GB 04-22-2013 07:46 PM

how about a VCP membership

jhs5120 04-22-2013 07:46 PM

Personally, I wouldn't pay anything over $9500.

I believe it's 17.99 a month if you want to see scans, which is critical imo.

I really think we will be seeing these Zone91 cards up for sale in the near future.

How many times in the last month have you been told about card target and VCP for pricing information? Don't lie, as I think it must be a three digit number.

Peter_Spaeth 04-23-2013 06:20 AM

It takes a village to buy a card.

ullmandds 04-23-2013 06:23 AM

I will be keeping my cards for the LONG haul I do not need the money invested into them. Most of the coins I owned I had them for 10 + years same with most of my collectibles. In 10 years I will be 43 years old so I have a long time to go I will most likely just keep them in my family and give them to my niece when I get really old....she can do what she wants with them...buy a car....pay off part of her future home....or simply keep them I would be happy either way!!!

One way or another she will get everything I own when my time is up here on Earth.

pawpawdiv9 04-23-2013 07:21 AM

in response to a 51 bowman (which is the true RC) and the 52 topps/

I love my 51 bowman, tho a BVG2, it looks incredible to me. It was affordable for a lower end budget type of guy i am. Just maybe down the line, i save up and afford a nice 52 topps, but that would take a good 4-5k for a lower end one.
Right now, i radther save that search down the line when it comes, they are so available.

MattyC 04-23-2013 08:00 AM

If you are intent on building a comprehensive collection, they are both important cards. The aesthetic preference is subjective, but if going to eventually own both, let the quality and price of the given specimen you encounter dictate which you acquire first. If it appeals to your eye strongly and is priced right, that's what matters. If too rigidly set on an order of acquisition, one always risks letting a great card they'd later want slip by.

pawpawdiv9 04-23-2013 08:30 AM

always eye appeal ^^^ love what he says. some like centering, some like the colors, and some like sharp corners...heck some like all of these characteristics.
and dont forget theres 2 variations of the 52 topps as well.
**Look in the post-war topic, we already discuseed about the 52 topps card and some talks about identifying fakes.

I prefer all around the 51 over the 52, I never understood why the 52 is a big deal and why people say it looks better. Yet that is just me, you shouldn't like the card because I like it. You should like it because you like it.

Stop worrying what everyone else would buy and buy what you want to buy. You shouldn't base your purchases off what others want, you should base them off what you want.

ullmandds 04-23-2013 10:08 AM

I also prefer the 51...there's something really cool about the light posts in the background that I really like!!!!

You are not alone -- I also like the '51B more. Bat-cocked pose and looking over his back and all that. I could also make a strong case for the '52B. I think it's a better looking set than the '52T (I'll expect a lot of flak for that last remark).

No flak here. I don't collect either set since I have mainly stuck to prewar, but I have been tempted to get the 51 and 52 bowman cards (even non mantle) over the 52 Topps cards. There is no way I could afford a 52 Topps Mantle, but I don't think I would purchase one if I could (unless I saw it as an investment).

Hey Peter

There is something cool about the old light towers pictured on BB cards. These Sisler cards are good examples of the rugged light towers of Shibe Park.

1953 Topps #69 "Let There Be Light!".

MattyC 04-23-2013 11:31 AM

I'm a huge fan of the 52B Mick; I think it's tragically overshadowed by his other release that year. In this way it might be a great value.

The 53B is another favorite-- I just love the composition of that photo, and all that blue sky.

The thing about those early Mick cards is once you get one, you want the whole run!

The only 50's Mick that doesn't hit my eye right is the 55B. I know this will sound crazy, but it just doesn't look like The Mick to me in that photo. Must be an odd angle at which it was taken or something.

CMIZ5290 04-23-2013 01:09 PM

I actually debated about this very subject. I had a chance to buy a 51 bowman Mantle PSA 8 (oc) versus a low grade 52 Topps Mantle around the same time. I chose the 51 bowman....

MVSNYC 04-23-2013 01:12 PM

Hi Kevin- how low grade was the 52? How OC was the 51? As you know, qualified cards are rather tuff to resell.

Don't recall the grade of the 52 topps, I want to say a 2 or 3....

Here's where I stand:

Love the 51 ands 52 Bowman Mantles over the 52 Topps.

With some exceptions, the black-boxed names on the front of the 51Bs often irks me (not the Mantle, however, I'd pick that, rookie or not).

52Bs in general is, in my opinion, the most beautiful post war issue. Not as complex as T206 as a set but,

Newk with hunched shoulders staring in for a sign? Two-fingered Spahn follow through and seeing where the ball ended up in the catcher's mitt? Grandstands, color, the way to the ...
