Different kind of auction fraud

Here's the same card, auctioned off four months apart in 2012:

Legendary:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/calvindog/8624984004/" title="LegendaryCobb by calvindog65, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8126/8624984004_fde73c3a8e_o.jpg" width="771" height="1280" alt="LegendaryCobb"></a>

Goodwin:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/calvindog/8624983070/" title="GoodwinCobb by calvindog65, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8121/8624983070_8ac0c57ddd_o.jpg" width="763" height="1280" alt="GoodwinCobb"></a>

This has been going on with Legendary since its inception: wildly manipulated, oversaturated scans which cause wrinkles, creases, discolorations, etc. to disappear.

Never mind

Leon 04-06-2013 08:27 AM

I think you have to be a VIP (paid) member of VCP to see those prices??

Correct Leon

Peter_Spaeth 04-06-2013 08:31 AM

Imagine what it would look like in a PWCC auction.

HRBAKER 04-06-2013 08:37 AM

I'm a paid member, I can't see them.
Do you have to be a Gold member?

calvindog 04-06-2013 08:47 AM

Fixed

You couldn't tell as you'd go blind if you stared at it.

Where do I buy a scanner with a radioactive setting?

Doug Allen is having a major sale -- everything 90% off (after he shills it up 250%).

Peter_Spaeth 04-06-2013 08:55 AM

As an aside, has anyone ever seen a mattress that wasn't at least 50 percent off?

Grand Jury time? But seriously, I wear the sunglasses that come with the catalog. You didn't get a pair with yours?

No, my catalog came with the rose colored glasses which enabled me to believe that the Cobb above actually sold for 32K. I'm sure the price just happened to drop in half a few months later in a Goodwin auction.

Just goes to show you having the right scanner can make a world of difference. ;)

I would have to agree...

On a related note, all the scans of cards in the legendary auction have either too much brightness or too much contrast going on. It's not horrible, but it prevents a bidder from getting an accurate representation of the colors and clarity on a card. I'm tempted to shoot them an email on this, but I'm not really bidding on any cards in their auction.

math

id pay 90 percent off of a 250 percent increase on the original price any day. maybe you should reconsider that math lol.

I'm Goth so prefer the shadowy version. The Goodwin scan better speaks to my stained soul and unearthly aspirations.

Give me a moment to post a Sisters of Mercy song.

Peter_Spaeth 04-06-2013 04:00 PM

The ultimate modern seller -- enhanced scans, shill bidding, and consignments from card doctors. Wonder how many folks fit the bill?

calvindog 04-06-2013 04:12 PM

Let's ask Bill Mastro's priest -- I'm sure he knows the answer.

Exhibitman 04-06-2013 04:27 PM

Ahh, religion: the last refuge of the scoundrel.

Bridwell 04-06-2013 09:16 PM

Cobb D304

Jeff, that same Cobb sold for $18,525 in the Goodwin auction in 2012.

In the Legendary auction, the same card went for $32,862.

I'm going to ask a really dumb question. Who overpays for these cards? For the Cobb, PWCC? With so much information available to price cards, I find it hard to believe that purchase prices are so outrageous.

I thought I was the only one here cool enough to be a Sister's fan!

In at least some cases, the consignors.

Did all the rich guys that only bid in Goodwin auctions die or something?

No, they all finally got computers and figured out there were other auction houses.

There's probably a strain or two of that going around.
