"If he was better, maybe he would have been the best": Auction Descriptions
Ever since I saw the description in the recent Goodwin Auction for the Mayo's Cut Plug N300 Germany Smith card I wanted to see what people thought of the description but waited out of respect of not outing the auction.
I just laughed when I read this: "Smith would have been a superstar if he only could have hit. With a career average of .243, teams found room for Smith--his glove saved runs and made him valuable. But if he could have boosted his average to the standards of the day, Smith might be remembered as one of the finest to ever play." As my flight instructor use to say to us (in good humor) "You would be really good at this if you didn't suck so much" In reality isn't this true of any person who has played the game that isn't already considered the greatest? If they could just boost their average they would be considered great? |
Oddly enough they said the same thing about Mendoza.....

"might have been a superstar if he could have hit".
Sounds like something Yogi Berra would have said. r/ Frank |
The Goodwin Auction descriptions are the absolute best:
Okay, I'll list the description for these T206 cards, you guess the player/card (click link for answer): "This rare artifact provides a perfect glimpse into early baseball, from the small cap to the heavy wool sweater. For the collector of type cards or the baseball historian, this [card] is a must have item." http://www.goodwinandco.com/LotDetai...0&category=111 "This is an extraordinary card with a rich history just waiting to be discovered." http://www.goodwinandco.com/LotDetai...0&category=111 "This tiny cardboard relic, this image of a man who died over 75 years still towers above the game that we all love. Make this baseball treasure a part of your life and an heirloom for your family." http://www.goodwinandco.com/LotDetai...0&category=111 This player's "T206 portrait is among the most desired cards in the T206 set." http://www.goodwinandco.com/LotDetai...0&category=111 This player’s card "is a reminder of a simpler time, when America was a growing nation and all eyes turned to baseball in the summer." http://www.goodwinandco.com/LotDetai...0&category=111 |

LOL! Must have been terminal. :D |
Just once I'd like to see them go the other route. "100+ year old card of an average looking guy who left no lasting impression on the game of baseball".
I think I'd bid just for the honesty!!:) |
The Mets never actually lose any of their games. It's just that many times, the team they're playing happens to exceed their performance.

i coulda been a contender!
