Old Judge "A" grade only

What are your thoughts on collecting N172s with a grade of A. I shy away from A cards almost always but for some reason im talking myself into it being ok with OJs. Should I have higher standards for OJs or get whatever authentic card i can?

Thank you

Jay

From answers I go a lot of OJ cards are miss graded and collecting authentic cards seems to be fine with most collectors.

Personally I would only buy a authentic card if I had no other choice I would try and find one graded but that is only me and I am new to this to. I rather have a card graded a 1 or 1.5 with a nice picture.

I don't have any problem with Authentic cards (note the avatar) However it depends on the reason for the A grade. Many T206 cards with printing anomolies are hand cut, which doesn't bother me. However, I do shy away from cards that are trimmed. It's just a matter of personal preference. :)

Thanks for the quick replies. I don't like trimmed either for any other set, but maybe it would make the ojs set more affordable to me.

I don't mind the Auth grade if its a nice card, but I wouldn't want my whole collection to be altered. I definitely don't seek them out on purpose. BTW when you crack the slab and put the card in a top loader, the Auth grade goes out of sight. :)

I'm not a huge fan, but a nice-looking A card is still better than an OJ with a numerical grade that is so faded that you can't even see it.

I don't mind an 'A' if its a key player or card. My most recent raw pickup that I submitted to SGC, knowing it would get an 'A' is below. I know it's faded, but I still dig the card and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg (just a back).

I'm totally ok with collecting cards that are graded "A" Especially Old Judges.

All of mine would probably grade A if I bothered to send them in. Skinned, trimmed, cracked.....Not a pretty one on the bunch. But they are real and the pictures are mostly not bad as far as contrast goes.

I do get a bit pickier as the cards get newer. I don't think I'd be interested in something after about 1985 that was trimmed unless it was a proof or something.

I don't have any problems collecting OJ that grade Auth, esp the hand cut ones. My biggest issue on OJ's is the image quality so I would take a crisp Auth over a barely visable 60 anyday. Also many Oj's are so tough to get, an auth might be your only choice.

Here are a few of mine-

Ordinarily I don't care for A cards...esp if graded examples are readily available. BUT...if it enables you to collect a card/set you otherwise cannot afford...I say go for it...I would avoid cards missing the ad on bottom though...OJ's are small enough as it is!!!!:D

I would definitely suggest taking an Authentic Old Judge if the player is tough enough to find. Too many players from the set never come up for sale, so it would be wise not to let them pass when they do. I've done it for a few players for that reason, done it for others(Delahanty for one) due to cost
