Mike Schmidt Vintage 1980's Game Used Ball with #500 inscription & date 4-18-87



Very Cool Vintage 1980's Game used baseball (used-and clearly hand mudded up). The ball is a Giamatti National League ball which dates to 1986-1989 (1989 he was name MLB president so there are really 3 seasons which the ball was manufactured). This ball was recently acquired from a gentleman who was selling off the estate of former National League Umpire Bob Engel. Engel was a national league umpire from 1965-1990. The ball is signed in an older ball point on the sweet spot with the inscription #500, and the date 4-18-87... Mike hit his 500th in the 9th to help the phillies go on to defeat the Pirates



I have checked the box scores and while Engel was not on the crew 4-18-17 he did have home plate duties 4-25-87, and 3b duties on 4-26-87... Schmidt hit #501 on 4-27-89... My guess is that Engle acquired this signature on a game used ball just a week after Schmidt hit the glorious home run... but who knows??? could it have been passed along to Engel from Schmidt or a colleague who umped in the game???


This is a very cool ball that will surely make a great addition to a Schmidt or Phillies Collectors collection...
