I wonder how many people who purchased cigarettes displayed in that case, died of lung cancer.

Whoa, way to throw a bummer into things.

I tried negotiating this being professionally shipped and paid for by me long ago but the seller stated local pick up only! I gave it my best shot! Great item.

How is this seller allowed to refuse to accept paypal. Is that why he insists on a pick up, so that he can get paid in cash?

Scott, as a non-smoker myself I don't usually defend smoking, but I have to ask: do you wonder how many of these guys died of lung cancer everytime you look at your T206s?

Texxxx 03-22-2013 05:59 AM

Tony, get hold of a shipping company close to them and arrange for them to pick it up and ship it to you.

The seller doesn't accept paypal only CASH. IMO I wouldn't send cash.

So far as the cancer goes, my dad died of lung cancer and I miss him, but there are a lot of other factors that may have conceivably made those cigarettes safer...like no additives in the tobacco, less processed paper, and whatever in the hell they put in the filters. With other factors in turn of the century life a lot of those guys never lived to be old enough to get lung cancer. And even if they hadn't I don't think any of them would still be around today. It is interest and we will never know because even if the data had been collected, and it wasnt, it would have almost certainly been corrupted by the tobacco companies.

As to the cabinet, its is neat. If I had a place to put it, I might think about it. I think it is reasonably priced and will pretty much always hold its value. I don't even think you could have a replica built from the ground up for much less unless you were handy with wood.

iwantitiwinit 03-22-2013 06:22 AM

For some reason that doesnt look like a period piece to me. It wouldnt surprise me if it was a repro.

You could try contacting a UPS store or similar small business pack and ship local to there. They are usually happy to take on something like this.

Good idea Bruce. It really would be no inconvenience to the seller to allow this.

Leon 03-22-2013 07:24 AM

A few thoughts. Great looking case. I think it's real and if it is a repro it's the best I have ever seen. I am almost sure the seller is violating ebay policy by saying "cash". They could say no paypal but, from what I believe, they would need to accept another online payment form...unless there is a clause pertaining to mandatory local pickup where payment is concerned. As far as the talk about cancer and so forth....well, our cards themselves didn't cause it. The case didn't cause it. It's an awful disease and one that took my mom about 38 yrs ago....We have probably all been affected by it in some way....

My grandfather died of cancer after being a chain-smoker all of his life; he lived into his 60's.

A fellow student at my high school was killed in a car wreck after drinking alcohol one night; he was 17 when he died.

That argument could be used by someone who drank all their life and at age 80 died from a car wreck as a result of drinking one night. Although tragic, I'll bet that wasn't his first alcoholic beverage.

Back to the piece...

The thing that bothers me is the glass...that may have been replaced at some point. It doesn't have that slightly "wavy" feel that glass of that people often does...just looks too good and too consistent.

Top piece of glass looks beveled....not sure that gives an idea of age or not? I wasn't even looking at the glass but the wood part looks almost 100% original to me. Look at the wear places on it. I would be extremely surprised if that aging is artificial. Even the slats have nice wear spots (especially in the middle of them).

t206blogcom 03-22-2013 09:02 AM

I made an offer on it a long time ago (it's been on eBay off and on for awhile) and live close enough where local pickup is feasible. My offer obviously was rejected, but the seller did lower his BIN by $500 after my offer to $2k. I'd love to have it, but a little short on room and think $2k is too much.

When someone asks you for the time, do you tell them how your watch is built?

Runscott 03-22-2013 09:45 AM

Here's my disclaimer, before the passive aggressive use this thread as an excuse to crawl up on their pedestals.

Disclaimer: I do collect T206's, which were used to advertise cigarettes; however, I don't feel that collecting them encourages cigarette use, as the cigarettes they advertised have already been used, and you can no longer get baseball cards packaged with tobacco products.

Lung cancer is a horrible disease - if Honus Wagner did, in fact, have his image pulled from the T206 set because he didn't want people buying cigarettes because of the cards, or because they thought that the players pictured on the cards were endorsing them, I can completely understand.

t206blogcom 03-22-2013 10:40 AM

Auction Ended

Looks like someone put in an offer and the seller accepted it.

Who's the lucky new owner??

Matthew H 03-22-2013 10:40 AM

The item is sold now. The glass on the left and right sides look original. I can't tell on the top and front.

ullmandds 03-22-2013 10:47 AM

You don't need a crystal Ball To have foreseen the item selling quickly Once it was outed!?

It did seem to go pretty quickly once it was being talked about...but only at roughly 65% of the BIN price...not that that means anything. Hopefully the buyer is happy with his new item! In this instance, I'm happy it was "outed" because I'm sure a board member scored it!

Runscott 03-22-2013 11:58 AM

Mike, how do you get to the accepted final price?

It was talked about in a thread a month ago. Inside the link, right after ebay.com, place ".au"

So it should look like this: ebay.com.au

then click enter and you should be able to see it.

Actually the argument does not apply in your scenario, but I digress.

Have there even been any discoveries of E* caramel display cases or the like?

Those damn candy cards

How many people gained weight and died of heart problems because of those damn candy cards? :)

How about your teeth rotting out because of the gum in the Goudeys? Those bastards! :p

We won't even get into the Kahns Weiners debate!
