Goudey sizing

Looking at the REA auction preview got me wondering about the size of Goudey cards. Was there a known size variance in Goudeys? Because this one

appears smaller than this one

And this one

appears smaller than this one

Oh yeah there can be. Standard size is 2 7/8 x 2 3/8, but I have seen them 1/16 bigger and smaller than that. That's a 1/8" discrepency which is huge. The listed size is just an average. I used to think anything smaller must be trimmed, but that's not the case. Sheet cutting in the factories was anything but an exact science up through the forties and into the fifties.

How about the older cards, like T206's or even older cards like N28's? Do they vary much in size from the factory? I have an N28 that was judged authentic by PSA because it isn't the right size, but it sure doesn't look trimmed to me.

Red

There was a thread about this several years ago. If I remember correctly, I had a red background Ruth that was smaller than my other Goudey cards. I think the consensus was that the red background cards tended to run a little smaller than the others.
