Hefty sale amounts
A few recent ebay auctions have produced seemingly high sale amounts. Is it a sign that vintage prices on quality stuff is starting to increase - even going up higher than prices were before the 2008 economic crash? Or is it a few whales coming back into the market? Or a cyclical effect since spring training is right around the corner and overall increased demand?
1938 Goudey Foxx PSA 8 = $ 3,450. T206 W.Johnson hands chest PSA 5 = $ 1,903. T206 Cobb bat on PSA 6 = $ 4,850 1921 Hornsby PSA 6 = $ 1,901. The sellers gotta be happy with these results. Steve |
I think it has a lot to do with the season beginning.

Perhaps a few new deep pocketed collectors hit the scene? Or perhaps the inflated stock market is giving some more financial confidence? Or perhaps there are dumb collectors who feel like wasting money and jacking up prices for the rest of us? :D

More likely the four that are posted are a small and non-random sample of the thousands that have sold during the same period, and the perceived uptick in prices is not actually happening. (See also the three threads last week about how low the recent auction prices have been.)

Just my opinion. I could be wrong... Rich |
In my experience I have always felt like modern goes up during spring training and the 1st half of the season. 2nd half of the season through the playoffs is time for vintage to shine!! Just my opinion...

CJs have sunk like a stone since last Halloween...

My perspective
I have definitely seen some higher realized prices on many issues lately. This is not across the board. In fact it seems to me some 19th century stuff has brought reasonable prices lately. 1933-1967 has seemed to be hotter lately than it was for a long time.
