1898 Baltilmore Oriole
 

Jay Hughes was born in Sacramento on January 22, 1874 and died in Sacramento on June 2, 1924. Hughes is one of my favorite Sacramento players. He played for many professional teams between 1893 and 1907 including Sacramento in 1893, 1894, 1897, 1899, 1900 and 1906. He played in the major leagues with the Baltimore Orioles in 1898 and the Brooklyn Superbas in 1901 and 1902. His death occurred when he fell from a railroad trestle on his way home from a bar at the age of 50. That railroad trestle was right behind my elementary school (near the Sacramento Zoo) and the kids in the neighborhood and I used to play on it in the 1950s. I recently picked this image of him when he was with Baltimore in 1898. It was billed as a “printed photo”, possibly a regional card. Can anyone shed any light on this image?
