New feature here: The Steal of the Night?
This may be a crazy idea. Perhaps it's even been proposed before and shot down. But I wonder if any folks far more expert than I would want to join in a regular posting that picks, or debates, the biggest "steal" in that night's, or previous night's, eBay and other auction action--for any card issue.
Like others, I often follow auctions, not even for cards I am bidding on, to see how they turn out, and sometimes decide at the end, "what a steal." But I'm rarely sure of that since I am not Mr. Expert on most issues and I often wonder what others who might know more really think. You know, you see a low price and figure, "must be a flaw I'm not seeing," but just a guess. Or you think, "wow, that just slipped through the cracks." Anyone care to take part in this? Or just another stupid idea? |
Usually any items I'm selling go for a "steal" while any items I'm interested in bidding on fetch record prices.

As a seller, board members would be embarrassing me constantly, but I guess the advertising would be good.
|
I'm always curious what people are paying so I like this idea very much

Wish I had seen this first, Seaver's RC in PSA 8 is a $1000 card: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1967-Topps-B...p2047675.l2557
I'm sure the eBay lister for Dave & Adam's is regretting his typo big-time, probably meant to list this card for a $1353.00 BIN, not $353.00. |
One word of caution: More than once on Net54, a member has posted about a great deal he got on eBay the day before, only to fall victim soon after to having the seller cancel the transaction. At least in one of those instances, a member of the 54 "family" contacted the seller, made a higher offer and got the card.
I'm sure that would never, ever happen today. Nevertheless, some folks think it best to remain quiet about their pickups until they have them in hand. |
I tend to agree with Rob...while this sounds like a fun idea....it can cause sellers to get pissed off...and could also potentially adversely affect resale of these "stolen" cards!!!

I'll quote my grandfather here, "Sometimes, things are best left unsaid".

Relisted
The Seaver is relisted:

Note: As I said, this would not be YOUR steal of the night but someone else's. I don't see the danger in that. Someone already posted someone's Seaver get.

I'm sure it's happened more than once. |
It's the reason why I normally don't post pickups til I have them in hand. I sometimes email with hobby friends about pickups and say "did you see this" or "can't believe I missed that". But I wouldn't do it on the board for fear of causing this kind of thing.

I lost an M116 Baltimore News card to a jealous board member when I BINed a card about 7-8 years ago and sent the payment immediately by PayPal. It does happen.... |
I can understand the reasons why this maybe shouldn't become a "new feature" of the board. I couldn't help but think of two recent "steals" I saw occur, neither of which will be affected by this outing.
The first is a 1915 CJ Zach Wheat card in PSA 7 that went fairly low. Oddly enough, this was a Probstein auction. And this N172 Brown's Champions Arlie Latham puchased as a BIN by yours truly. Maybe not a steal, exactly, but a pretty good deal. |
I'm with Larry on this one. Better left unsaid. If I do see something good that i'm not interested in but know someone that is, I usually PM them instead of posting it on the board. I do agree to not post purchases until you receive them.

id just not post any info till the auction ends, then have the talk about it. No need to out the auction.:)
|
Oops! I misread this and thought it had something to do with The Five Satins, In the Steal of the Night....doo wop, doo wop...

IMO, a daily update of what bargains people bought on eBay just serves to move more sellers toward astronomical BIN prices to ensure that they are not the seller of such bargains.
|
I would just wait until like a week or so after the item sells to post about it, or if you are the winner, wait until you receive the item in hand so you don't need to worry about anyone contacting the seller about the card when they don't have it anymore...
