1922 W572 Joe Wood?
 

So, I've been slowly collecting a full set of the W572s (have a little over half, but this isn't a front burner set for me, I just pick them up when I get a chnace) and one thing I recently realized is that I've at least seen for sale one card of everyone in the set except ... Joe Woods.

I searched google and ebay and can't find a copy of the image anywhere.

Does anyone here have a scan they could post? Just curious to see what it looks like!

Have 93 out of 121 but have not seen that one.

Doing some digging today with another board member on this set and card. In the Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards it lists 121 cards in the set. I believe that this number is most likely wrong as the cards were issued in strips with 10 players per strip. If that were true, then shouldn't the actual number be 120 cards or 12 strips of 10 players. In further review, Joe Wood card would most likely be the player listed that did not actually have a card as he retired from MLB in 1922 and went on to coach at Yale for the next 20 years. Thoughts?

Hi Ken,

So according to the population reports, there has been a graded Joe Wood. Never seen it. But I'll give the TPGs enough credit to say it exists.

There are 7 that have never been graded, but I either have or have seen 4 of these now. So if one was never issued, it would have to be: Cruise, Rapp or Curtis Walker.

BTW, Wood does appear in the 1923 Willard set even though I guess he retired in 1920. Perhaps a TPG mislabeled a trimmed Willard one as a W572.

Edit: Actually, he didn't retire in 1920. According to baseball reference, he was a position player for 1918-22.

You are correct, just found it on SGC website. Did not see the others you had listed so it may be one of them. The number 121 for the set doesn't make much sense as to players were on strips of 10. Knowing the state of printing in that era would almost certainly make it an even number of cards. Guess it is possible that TPG could also mistake a trimmed V100 for a w572 as I have seen errors before in TPG grades. Interesting??? The picture on the V100 of Joe Wood would make sense as it is the same picture used for the E120 version of Joe Wood and W572 cards basically used the same photos as E120.

FYI - in 2011 REA sold a set which had the Cruise in it (or more accurately, it was not listed as being missing in a 101 card set).

This brings Rapp or Curtis Walker down to the final candidates to potentially not exist in the W572 set.

As update to my earlier post ... I thought I had a picture of Barbare ... but I don't.

So IF there is a card in the checklist that it looks like it's either Barbare or Rapp (assuming that the TPGs at least can identify the W572s correctly!).
