Circa 1961 Cin. Reds team photo i.d. help

Anyone wanna take a stab at identifying the rest of these fine fellows?
Thanks |

Interesting... that sure appears to be Tony Perez, but there is absolutely no record of him ever wearing the number 17. I checked numerous sources, and came up empty.
Also, Perez' first Major League exposure was in 1964. Same for Bill McCool (who is also identified in the photo). So is there any chance that the team pictured is a Minor League Reds affiliate (and not the Major League Team?) Eager to hear what team this actually is, if someone here can shed some additional light. |
This would be Class D Geneva, NY.

Here is the team roster for the Geneva Redlegs

I do not see an instance where Tommy Harper and Tony Perez played minor league ball together.
|
McCool did not seem to play minor league ball
|
So wouldn't it more likely be a Spring Training Photo? (since Perez, McCool and Harper are all pictured together)
Probably Spring Training of 1962-3, give or take a year? Apparently it can't be the Geneva Reds or any other Minor League Team... |
I don't think it's Tommy Harper in the photo.. Perez is 6'2" and Harper is 5'9".
|
Good call. I believe #63 is probably Lee May.
|
I was hoping someone would spot "Charley hustle":).
|
I don't know what year it is or what is going on but I don't see Frank Robinson...

Thanks for everyone's contributions.
I believe this photo to possibly be the first photo of Tony Perez in a Reds uniform. The key I think is Harry Anderson. He had a cup of coffee with the Reds in both 60 and 61 but never made it back. This and the fact there wearing unis the Reds starting wearing in 1961 and through the mid-60's. As your probably aware, it was common practice to wear uniforms from the previous season during spring training. Most likely this photo was taken during spring training 1962 or possibly 61. I'm just trying to identify the rest of what I believe are non-roster invitees. |
Why don't you send an e mail to the Cincinnati Reds museum and see if they can help you out?

seems the earliest this could be was 1963, as Baseball Reference says 20-year old Bill McCool was first signed before the 1963 season. Harry Anderson, if that is him, was coming off a fairly decent 1962 AAA season in San Diego, and may have been invited to Spring Training by the Reds in '63. Since he never played professionally after 1962, perhaps the 31-year old gave it up if/after he was released by the Reds.

Yes... agree. I also think Spring 1963 is the best bet for this photo.
|
I believe your both right. That probably explains the absense of Pete Rose as well...
|
Agree with McCool, Perez and May. Coach Jim Turner ?? ( 2nd from left
first row ). Art Shamsky ?? ( on left side of 2nd row ). I feel pretty sure about Turner. Could go either way on Shamsky . |
I believe this to be the companion piece / photo to mine. Thoughts???
