Not a bad postcard.....

No, I didn't buy it, but I had fun watching this item:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honis-Wagner...p2047675.l2557

Jay Wolt 02-19-2013 07:58 PM

Would others have seen this if the seller correctly spelled "Honus"?

I don't know. Do you search by way of "Honus?" I know if I looked, I would have looked under Wagner.

terjung 02-19-2013 08:38 PM

Quite a few people found it. I don't think the misspelling hurt it too much (if at all).

Hans

What I noticed was the person who wrote it, asked if Anna could pick "him" out of the bunch?" Now, perhaps the sender was just being coy, but perhaps it was sent from one of the players or Mgr's ?? It was addressed to Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania... Anyone know of any relatives or family of any of the players in that area ? Also, there is some interesting initials at the bottom of the back of the pc that I can't make out...

Great PC by the way... I never saw it - Thanks Brian for bringing it to life on N54

HRBAKER 02-19-2013 08:40 PM

Yeah, seemed to fly right under the radar....................:)

Brian Van Horn 02-19-2013 08:53 PM

Slippery Rock is north of Pittsburgh. Relatives are/were a possibility.

Exhibitman 02-19-2013 08:55 PM

The Honis is nice but the Dreyfuss is the sleeper on the card, IMO. There's lots of Wagner stuff but not all that much career contemporary cardboard for Dreyfuss.

cdn_collector 02-19-2013 09:01 PM

Have to agree -- anyone searching for Wagner is probably using 'Wagner' over Honus (or Honis!).

Either way, that is a pretty awesome looking postcard. Seems to have a lot of the same images as others, but still cool all the same.

Regards,

Richard.

The inscription reads "What do you think of this bunch? Can you pick me out?"

So yes, it's from a player.

Man, that player sure does have exquisite penmanship. ;)

sox1903wschamp 02-19-2013 09:33 PM

Very nice PC.

h2oya311 02-19-2013 09:41 PM

I watched it too. This also happens to be one of the earliest Barney Dreyfuss pieces out there...very nice PC. I looked up "1909 New Texas" on Google (per the inscription on front) and found an address in Pittsburgh. I was a bit confused by his remark, but now understand.

I hope it was a board member who won -- perhaps one of the Jeffs??

Bicem 02-19-2013 09:48 PM

Was watching but didn't bid, great piece though!

r2678 02-19-2013 09:49 PM

The initials at the bottom could be for State Route.

jb217676 02-19-2013 10:33 PM

Wasn't this Jeff, cool PC though!

So much for bargain prices on e-bay for postcards, this one would probably have sold for about the same through an auction house, unlike the Frank Baker from a few weeks ago.

Leon 02-20-2013 06:57 AM

I thought it would go much higher actually.

jp1216 02-20-2013 07:28 AM

Guess we need to name everyone on the PC and find the connection to Anna Greer. Or match the handwriting.
I was watching this too and hoping for the misspelled name to keep the price low.

What are the 2 marks directly below "me" on the reverse ffrom the writing? Is that park of PC of hand writing?

steve B 02-20-2013 08:33 AM

The bottom of the address is c/o SRSN

Slippery rock state normal school, a teachers college.

The two marks under the message look like two trees underlined.

Maybe some sort of rebus puzzle? The obvious would be Underwood, but I can't find an Underwood with the Pirates, so that's probably not it.

good research Steve!

Runscott 02-20-2013 11:55 AM

While the auction was live, I did every type of search I could think of and came up empty, including comparing handwriting to that of players pictured on the card, googling their wives' names, etc.

I think the sender was just joking around, especially given that the players are i.d.'d on the front of the card.

If my grandparents were any indication, senses of humor weren't invented until the 1960's.
