Walter Johnson vs. Babe Ruth
I found my notes on head-to-head Walter Johnson vs. Babe Ruth. Some of you probably know this info, but it is so interesting, I put it out here.
These are consecutive head-to-head appearances of the two pitchers (as both were in American League and played against each other): August 14, 1915 - Ruth defeats Johnson 4-3 April 17, 1916 - Ruth defeats Johnson 5-1 June 1, 1916 - Ruth defeats Johnson 1-0 August 15, 1916 - Ruth defeats Johnson 1-0 in 13 innings September 9, 1916 - Ruth defeats Johnson 2-1 September 12, 1916 - Johnson defeats Ruth 4-3 Walter Johnson was in his prime. Babe Ruth was very young. Ruth defeated Johnson 5 times in a row before he lost to the Big Train. Walter Johnson is considered one of the top 3 pitchers of All Time, arguably the best. |
Further cements that Ruth was the best of all time.....Cobb second IMO....

Red Sox were WAY better then the Senators. They won the World Series in 1915, 1916 and of course 1918. Put WaJo on the Sox these results would most likely be different. Cy won more games then WaJo, yet Walter was the better pitcher when evaluating pitchers, wins aren't everything.
On a related note. I would love to see WaJo vs. Justin Verlander, that would be SICK. |
ruth vs johnson
it's true, the sox were much better than the Sens. Whats really interesting here though is that all but one game was won or lost by one run... it would be fun to drill down into the box scores to see how many of Walter's runs were earned...
Either way, I would love to go back in time to catch one of these games... Great thread -Dave |
