Gehrig Knob

So mears posted this pic on facebook yesterday of Gehrig holding a bat in 1938 and on the knob is stamped 27L. Anyone have ideas? Maybe early model number stamped on knob, or just a random event that they stamped numbers on the knob.

Could it be 37 1/2.. gehrigs weights were stamped in during that era.

If you're able to blow up the pic, you can see better that it looks closer to a 2 then 3.
