Let's see some Jimmie Foxx cards
I have always been a big fan of "The Beast". The more I read about him the more I believe he is an underappreciated slugger.
On July 19, 1932, Foxx's 39th homer put him on pace to surpass Ruth's 60 homers. But the legend of that season grows deeper. Some historians have researched old records and discovered that in 1932 Foxx hit nine balls against screens in St. Louis and Cleveland that weren't there when Babe hit 60. Foxx also hit two homers that season in games that were rained out, and the homers disappeared from he record books. Add them up and Jimmie Foxx would have had 69 homers that season. Think of the impact, good or bad, that would have had on Roger Maris. I believe from what I have read that chasing 61 was really bad on Maris' health down the stretch. Interesting indeed. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m...4gFoxxPSA5.jpg |

Man O Man....those are some nice cards already shown. Jimmy was certainly prolific in different card series. Pardon the other cards.....(I'm lazy.)

love the cards all. While it's not technically a "card", below is the earliest Double X photo I've ever seen, which I was able to pick up in 2012.
It's a c1924 cut-out of a Sporting News press photo while he was with the Easton Farmers as a 16 year-old. |

Anyone know the origin of the spelling of his first name? Most of these cards have it spelled in the traditional manner of 'Jimmy,' even including his signature on the fronts with him using the same spelling. Only a couple have it 'correctly' spelled 'Jimmie.'
Was it just lazy editing and research by the card companies or is there a deeper story here? |

Jimme A Break
Foxx. Jimmy or Jimmie? He signed his name with a "Jimmy", so that is what I'd go for. Yet, the text on the Cooperstown site lists him as a Jimmie while his plaque states Jimmy. Most TPG flips use what is on the face of the card, but not always. Even raw XXs go back and forth twixt the two. I'd hate it if the truth was lost to posterity. What gives?

Paul,
While there are a few "Jimmy" signatures that have been authenticated, he almost always signed "Jimmie". My guess is that the companies just used the more common spelling. All legal documents that I've seen have either been signed "James Emory Foxx" or "Jimmie Foxx". Wow - this is the first time I've actually been able to add something meaningful to one of the threads. Pulled from a pack by none other than Lionel Carter. This was the set that started him collecting back in 1933.

Not a card, but a nice fan snapshot from July 1938. Amazing cards from everyone! The dixie premium is one of my favorites, and I do not think I have seen any without the punch holes!

Not Mine, but I always thought this was a great photo:
1937 American League All-Stars: Lou Gehrig, Joe Cronin, Bill Dickey, Joe*DiMaggio, Charlie Gehringer, Jimmie Foxx, and Hank Greenberg. All 7 of these men went on to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...-greenberg.jpg B/W: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/.../Image3-36.jpg |
