I've always liked Billy Martin...collected his cards...and I've always wanted an autograph...would have loved a single signed ball...but I thought this was interesting...and it is now mine!!!!:)

Really leery about purchasing deceased BB HOF unless on official documents, so I hope the Paige is real.

That has to be the coolest Martin autograph I've seen. Nice pickup.

Billy Martin; I got this personally at Mickey Mantle's Restaurant in the mid-late eighties. It was a private invitation upon the eve of the public opening.

This one has been work in progress...
 

I gave the plate to a friend and gave him the idea to put this together... I ended up getting the plate back in trade which has made for a wonderful display piece!

LOVE That display Dave. BTW. thanks for e'thing. Still w/out work, but may have a tax season job soon.

The year is young but my best autograph acqusition "so far" is this fellow right here ...PEBBLY JACK GLASSCOCK !

Along with having a funny name he was considered to be at the time of his retirement from the game in 1896 one of if not THE best defensive infielder prior to 1900. He's been mentioned a time or two as a possible future Hall of Famer.

Didn't hit too bad either as he won the batting title in 1890. Glasscock's autograph is pretty darn RARE he died in 1947.

Wow - some really cool autographs. I love the Billy Martin note. Back in the late '80s I used to go to a strip club that he got thrown out of.

Crossed two more off my HOF Auto "Rookie" collection with Billy Herman and Rick Ferrell. Picked up dupes of Hubbell and Hoyte along the way.

Great stuff guys...that Young and Glasscock are awesome!!!!! I typically don't buy autographs...and I guess I still dont...as I traded a chair for this and some other stuff!!!!!

These are about as far from pre-war as possible, but...


I got two game used/signed bats via the Pay It Forward thread on Collector's Universe. One is a Pudge Rodriguez bat signed to Gary Sheffield (very light use) and the other is a Miguel Tejada model bat used and signed by Melky Cabrera in his rookie season (heavy use). Sorry, I don't have any pictures right now.

If any of you visit the CU forum, the Pay It Forward thread has been fun. You take an item that is offered and then offer up one yourself of similar value. I took the Pudge bat and when I received it in the mail, the Cabrera bat was in there "to help me start my GU bat collection"! I offered up a signed Koufax card in return. It's something I started on CU last year and aside from a few tiffs, has been a really fun thread and I've gotten a lot of cool items. While CU isn't usually as mature in attitude as Net54, there are some really good guys over there, if you can get over the lack of T206. ;)

Love the Billy Martin letter ! I got to watch him manage the Yanks day in and day out and have to say he was the BEST manager I ever saw. Just raw genius and he got it from Stengel.

Funny story ..but true , Back when Billy was managing the Yanks and had just gotten canned

I was living in Ocala Florida (where George Steinbrenner owned a hotel and had a house). Well a car pulled in and there were two young girls driving and their tag said "YANKS 2" and I asked them if they were Yankees fans and they said "Oh yes our whole family are Yankees fans"

So I said "The Yanks would be alot better off if that idiot Steinbrenner would just let Billy manage instead of firing him all of the time !!!"
They both looked at me, one of them said something unpleasent ...:) , they got in their car and drove off. A friend of mine said "There you go pissing people off again"....lol, and he asked what I said and I told him and he told me that was George Steinbrenner's DAUGHTER !!!!!

I picked up a couple of things from the frame shop I'll post later but Jim's story reminds me of what happened to me at a Charlotte card show.

Leo Durocher had recently passed away. A young lady and another girl came to my table and said, "I'm looking for Leo Durocher." Being the smart alec I can sometmes be, I replied, "He's dead." The girl got a strange look on her face and said, "I know. I'm his grand daughter."

I decided to start this year off by finishing my 1934 Cardinals project, so of course my first pick up is 3 1969 signed Topps Cubs cards of Don Nottebart, Willie Smith and Randy Hundley. Yep, different year, same 'ol me.

Funny. I read that twice before finishing. We've all been there before!

I picked up three terrific older signed no-hit pitcher GPC's from Jim Stinson's recent sale of the Stanley Lippincott collection from 1948-1950.

It really seems to me that this kid's collection was tremendous after looking through all of the names that were part of it. I'm glad to see that some of the others on net54 picked up some of the rarities out of this collection.

Jim Tobin and Don Black's signatures are really toughee's and I've been looking to add GPC's of these guys as well as a nice Nap Rucker GPC for many years.

I love the Nap Rucker personalization surrounding Ground Hog Day.

I just added one more nice GPC that I've wanted to find:
Catcher/ Manager Bill Carrigan from early in the history of the Boston Americans/Red Sox.

Bill Carrigan was the receiver in three of the early Red Sox no-hitters:
Smoky Joe Wood in 1911
George "Rube" Foster in 1915
HB "Dutch Leonard in 1915

This Carrigan GPC originated from the Stanley Lippincott collection and came by way of Jim Stinson. Carrigan was a giver, signing his name TWICE with vintage fountain pen ink...

Notice the two differently-formed "C"s, and "g"s, in two signatures, done immediately, one-after-the-other. The "B"s, too.

(That's why autograph authentication ain't as simple as "the 'B' doesn't look right.")

I noticed exactly the same thing. I thought it was very weird that a person would sign so inconsistently in one sitting. There's a definate lesson to be learned there...

Oops. Meant "g"s, not "y"s.

It could be that Carrigan was aware that his signature varied, so he provided two examples so that 21st century people would not be confused.

Maybe he signed the bottom one first and didn't like it. Sometimes at work I'll hate my signature and print another letter to sign.

Jim Stinson and I discussed this today when I purchased the Carrigan GPC.

Several players routinely signed a GPC twice. I believe that this came at the request of some of the earlier TTM hobbiests who requested this so they actually could get two cuts out of one GPC.

You will see former players such as Smoky Joe Wood and Bill Carrigan consistently sign GPC's in this manner. Quirky, but pretty cool!

What caused Carrigan to sign differently on the same GPC? I don't have a clue...

HOF Ray "Cracker" Schalk from the Stanley Lippincott collection
 

I just picked up one final nice 1949 GPC from Jim Stinson from the Staney Lippincott collection:

HOF Ray "Cracker" Schalk. Ray Schalk was a "clean" member of the 1919 Black Sox. He caught three no-hitter games (Joe Benz, Eddie Cicotte and Charlie Robertson's Perfect Game), plus one unofficial no-hitter (Jim "Death Valley" Scott).

He was known as a fiery pepperpot of a field general during his playing days.
