ID on 1910 ? Portsmouth Baseball Uniform
8 Attachment(s)
Hi All and Merry Christmas. Back in 1992 I purchased this Baseball uniform and was told it was from 1910. Based on other teams at that time (ie the Cubs and Pirates) who also had their name run vertically down the front, I feel the date is in the zone. It says "Portsmouth". Do you think it is the Portsmouth, VA team or some other city.
I'd love to find a photo of team members wearing this jersey. It is in excellent shape, no mothing or rot, the "Victor Sporting Goods and Co." Tags on both jersey and pants are bright and fantastic (sorry for the fuzzy photo on the pants tag). It has navy blue piping down the pant leg and the pant leg closure and the bottom of each leg is quite colorful(see photo) Any help in identifying it further or if anyone has or knows of images of this team in this uniform, I'd appreciate seeing it. Thanks and Happy New Year, Mike |
i wouldnt just look at virginia its possible that its from ohio

it does not match the 1910 portsmouth VA team uniforms as shown in the T210 cards

I just found this image of the 1908 Portsmouth Cobblers , Ohio State League. Looks like the same pattern as mine and the ones in this photo look to be "Home" and mine is definitely the "Road" Jersey. As we know, pre WW1 uniforms were definitely dramatically different from each other, like the 1909 Chicago Cubs Home and Road jerseys.Again, mine also could be a later road version. Thanks for the Ohio tip. What do you guys think? Mike

you also have RI and New Hampshire

I believe Victor Sporting Goods was located in New England. That may have some bearing on this being for a team in the area.

Victor uniform
Thats a beautiful uniform. Have you tried searching in old spalding guides? I know they show photos of many teams in them - not just the major league squads. If you google loc.gov and spalding guides, you can view page by page many of the spalding guides online. They don't have them all digitalized, but there is a nice assortment of years.

from looking at Spalding guides
1906 Portsmouth, Va.--just a P on the uniform 1908 Portsmouth, Va.--P on uniform 1920 Portsmouth, Va--no lettering 1921 Portsmouth, Va--Truckers across uniform 1908 Portsmouth, Ohio--had jackets on 1910 Portsmouth, Ohio--nothing on front of uniform 1911 Portsmouth, Ohio---P on uniform 1912 Portsmouth, Ohio--P on uniform 1915 Portsmouth, Ohio--in street clothes no other pictures of the teams in the guides to 1930. If you go to Google Books Search and type in Portsmouth baseball, there's a book about the Va. team and photos you can look at. nothing that looks like your uniform.. |
Thanks Don, for looking those up. I have a 1909, 1912 and 1915 Reach Guides I'm pulling out tomorrow and going through. Did an internet search on Rhode Island and NH...no teams that I could find. The Victor Sporting Goods Logo on the uniform is definitely pre 1918, so that narrows it, because of the cut and style of the uniform, I believe it falls in the 1908-1917 time frame at the very latest. And based on major league teams that used this vertical lettering, I'd say 1909 to 1912...but who knows?
I'll keep searching and I really appreciate everyone's help and suggestions, Mike |
Unfort can't help...but a beautiful jersey! If ever looking to sell pls let me know.

Thanks, the condition is amazing. I'm remembering now I bought it from a dealer thru Sports Collector's Digest many years ago. Hopefully I (or someone) can ID it....it is too nice not to know the heritage of it. Happy New Year, Mike
