Your Best Pickup of the Year -- 2012 Edition
This may be the last subforum that doesn't have one of these threads. :)
Please post your best postwar (pre-1980) pickup(s) of the year. |

Probably not the best, but some of my personal favorites of the year.
|
Best pickup
2012 has been a great year for me. Added a fiancé to my household and three mantle rookies (51 Bowman, 51 Wheatie, and 52 Topps*). Of the cards, I'd say the PSA 4 wheaties is my favorite. I can't figure out how to post scans yet, but it makes me smile every time I look at it.
Hope that the rest of the board had a great year and wonderful holiday season. It is so great to have such large community of knowledgeable and friendly people with the same passion for collecting. |
Dan Dee
I REALLY wish i could own YOUR Dan Dee Mantle. I had many nice pickups this year, here are some:

1968 Atlantic Oil Claude Osteen. This is one of the winning SPs for the contest. They had to be turned in to the dealer or mailed into the company to redeem for the cash prizes and they were not returned cancelled, so the winning cards just aren't around. I've been collecting the set for many years and this is the first and only winning card I've ever seen:

Chuck that Dan Dee Mantle 5 looks fantastic. Undergraded for sure.
Compare it w/ this 6 that i sold a few months ago. Congrats on the pickup. http://www.qualitycards.com/pictures/dandeemantle.jpg |
Thanks, all, for posting those cool pickups.
Patrick -- impressive '57 Mays there, especially. Nice one! Bestdj777 -- really wish you had a scanner for those Mantles -- congrats on the engagement! :) Adam -- cool background story on that card. Were the numbers in the white circle supposed to be scratched off? Also, if players numbered 10 are the winners, as stated on the front, why does your card have an "11" in the white circle? Just curious. Nice find! Jay -- thanks, my friend! I looked closely and don't see any wrinkles or surface issues. I may crack and resubmit if I ever need to sell it, since all four edges have the perforations (ie. no risk of "evid of trim" coming back). |

My best post war pick ups were these three Mantles. While they don't compare to your guy's higher grade beauties, they are wonderful to me.
Thanks, AndyH |
Adam,
When you posted the pic of the Osteen in the other thread, I didn't realize you had actually picked it up too. I thought you just had a scan of it. Nice pick up man! Best, AndyH |

Andy, beautiful Mantles! To me, there is nothing nicer than a well loved Mantle card. My Mantle/Boyer looks like it was shoved into a set of bike spokes, and someone cut out the center circle of my 58 and glued it to a hat. Yours look gem mint compared to those. |
Thanks for the kind words about my Mantles guys! I really appreciate it. I can't get enough of them.

You almost never see the SP's. That is one reason I've never really tried to put this set together. Nice pickup |
This is the first purchase made specifically for my new vintage collection (and first PSA graded vintage card). The Pirates are my second favorite baseball team (after the Brewers), and the 1953 Bowman Color set is probably my all-time favorite. So, this was an easy choice to get my feet wet.
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/807...owmancolor.png I hope everybody likes it. I must have stared at it for 15 minutes straight when I pulled it out of the bubble mailer. :D |
I have to say, also, that I absolutely love my scanner. I picked up an old Canon CanoScan 8400F on Ebay for $40, and this thing scans like a dream. All I had to do was slightly tweak the levels in Photoshop, and voila. What a beautiful card!
I am so happy! :D Now I'm trying to decide what to buy next. I've got it narrowed down to a 1958 Topps Roberto Clemente, a 1953 Bowman Color Stan Musial, a 1957 Topps Hank Aaron, and a few others. |
2012
This gave me a run of these programs from 1959 to 1966 ( including the 1964 a boxed card set)

Neat item Al!
|
Agreed, great stuff, Al.

Yeah, Andy and David, the set is a beast to collect. I remember the Atlantic Oil cards from when I was a kid. I got a huge box of cards from a family friend whose kids were already grown up and had quite a few of them in there. I lost track of them over the years--probably traded them--and then started with the set again about a dozen years ago. I quickly got the 40 basic cards done, then found one of the booklet prize winners, and have spent the next decade+ looking for the cash prize winners. I really kicked the tires a bunch on the Osteen since it was very expensive for a freakin' Claude Osteen card, but my rule of thumb is that when I come back to an item repeatedly that's my [ample] gut telling me to buy it, so I pulled the trigger on it. At this rate I should have the set finished by 2113.

Do the high dollar redemption cards even exist and/or has anyone seen them?
|
no redemption cards for me...

no redemption cards for me, but my best pick-up of 2012 (post-war) must have been my 1951 Mantle. A close second would have to be this 1973 Jim Rice rookie that I picked up from Phil earlier in the year:

Here are my favorite post-war pick-ups from last year (both bought from BBCE at the Baltimore National):

Wow
Wow, that '75 Rice PSA 9 is AMAZING. Just wanted to add a couple more pickups that I had from this year from my original post:

Nice clemente psa 7 rookie!
|
I don't buy a lot of postwar but I am working on a couple of postwar sets. This '59 Bazooka Nellie Fox SP is probably my best p/u of 2012.

Great Clemente's sir.

Nice centering on Clemente 56 topps Psa 6.5!
