E121 variation price fluctuations.

Given the huge lot of E121 singles that David Vintage had for auction on ebay that ended last night, I cannot help but notice the crazy fluctuations in price that occur when it comes to rare variations in the E121 set. I use as my example the Fred Toney no trees.

I am a Fred Toney collector, at one time I had a E121 no trees raw that I bought for $60.00 and sold for around $80.00. I then lost out on two different graded examples similar to the one I won yesterday night for a price around $200.00 dollars each. The graded psa 2.5 I won yesterday closed for $50.00! I was excited to get it for that price but I was shocked at how low it went. Perhaps it was because there were so many other rarities up for auction from the set up for auction at the same time?

Has anyone else noticed any crazy fluctuations on the tougher E121 variations? I of course am going on information that the E121 Toney no trees is considered tough to find in this set etc. Here is a scan of the card I won below. I have to admit I kicked myself for selling my raw one but I am glad I got another one for my collection.

Last night was wild...... Elmer Miller went for $400.00 and Meusel went for over $500.00. Basically it was crazy because a few were looking to add tough cards to their collection. The rarer the card,,the higher the price. Also the cards were bought from Mile High at an already inflated price so the seller was trying to recoup his money. I ended up getting the Sallee card out of the group for a fairly reasonable $225.00. I knew who a few of the bidders were but not all. If I had an unlimited budget, could have finished off my E121 Yankees and Giants. Was fun to watch.

Also, on the Toney subject, have seen quite a few examples recently. Would explain the lower cost in general
