December Pickups
1 Attachment(s)
Hey all. Even though I actually picked this up at the end of November, I didn't think you'd mind me starting a December thread with it.
I was going to try to trade for this last card I needed to complete my 1969 Deckle Edge set, but I was at a show recently and couldn't pass it up for a buck. Thanks a lot, AndyH . |
69 Deckle
Congrats Andy on completing the set
|
Thanks Al. I picked up a bunch of 70's Topps for my sets, about 10 1968 Topps Game cards to start that set, and a few other goodies. I didn't want to post everything though so I thought this card was a nice highlight for me from the show. Overall it was a good show for me.

That's right Al, my favorite squad of all time - the '67 El Birdos!
Although not a card I also just picked this up, referred to as a positive negative whatever that is: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...T/marisneg.jpg |

woops...since the November pick up thread was above this one when I posted the other 51 scrap strip, I didn't see it.
|
I think that strip is just cool in this thread Leon. :D

In 1974 my father began buying me one box of unopened Topps cards for Christmas, at the time I was 11. Hank Aaron had become my favorite player following the passing of Clemente. I recall the joy of sorting the cards and being thrilled with card # 1. This tradition continued unitl age 26 when I married. At that time he decided I was too old for cards.
Two years ago I had a bit of luck and purchased seven boxes of unopened Topps 1975-76 basketball cards for $140.00. I obviously sold them for much, much more. I used the opportunity to purchase Rookie cards of both Clemente and Aaron. There was no choice to be made for the Clemente (55 Topps). However, I agonized between the 54 Topps and the 54 Johnston Cookies Hank Aaron. Although there were far many more 54 Topps available I made the conventional choice and picked up the Topps version. Today I came home from work and found a USPS box addressed to me. It contained this card. I knew immediately where it came from. I called my 73 year old father and he said, “Merry Christmas”. For a moment it was 1974 all over again for both of us. |

Mike,
That's awesome that your father did that. Very cool of him and what a sweet card he chose too. --------------------------------------------------------- This is another pickup for me this month. I just love the image and colors on this 1954 Bowman Jim Gilliam. I just started this set and this is one of my first to pick up from it. Thanks, AndyH |
Nice card...did Jim Gilliam ever have an unattractive card?
|
Love the Aaron and the great story of you and your father enjoy.
|
Great Aaron RC, Mike.

Steve, that's a sweet Mantle. And Andy, that's a really nice Gilliam.
I am such a sucker for the early 50's Bowmans! |

Well, I've officially started the 1967 Topps set now that I've picked up this one. And the condition is right up my alley. :D
Thanks, AndyH |

Got a great deal on this puppy. Only need one more for the set! #133 if anyone has one. My whole set is in a binder, should I break this bad boy out? Never done it before, any advice on how to proceed? I'm pretty happy with the card, no real nasty creases, just a tiny paper loss, too bad it's on the front, but for $45 you can't beat that deal!
|
Nice Kaline RC, Rob, especially for a "2".
|
Thanks Phil, some back damage to thank for that. I am greateful for it however because it kept the price in my ballpark.

I just might put together a low grade (real low) Nabisco set. And I couldn't resist the ironic miscut Brock

Gentlemen:
Found the below at the recent Valley Forge show! I had never seen or heard of before. COOL STUFF!! Premium photos of Musial, Vernon, D. Walker, newspaper ad slicks, instore display props etc. Anyone have info?? |
Champs
Neat items Whitey. Wonder when the last time was that Stan wore a hat.
|
Whitey, I'll second what Al said about these being really neat items. I have an example of the Vernon photo (I'm a Vernon collector), but I've never seen the rest of these very interesting items - it's this sort of find that makes collecting so much fun, IMO.

Congrats on completing a gem of a set! |
These aren’t all from December, but I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had a chance to post... so here goes the latest additions to my Jackie collection:

Freeing Up cards
Robs--All my sets are in binders in their natural state. I have freed up a lot of cards using a bolt cutter. Works quick with two snips at the top. Have never damaged a card
|
The '54 Dan Dee Mickey Mantle was my "Holy Grail" at the beginning of this year. A nice, clean, centered mid-grade copy had eluded me for years. Then, in late Feb. of this year, a beautiful PSA 5 was offered up on eBay by PWCC. I won that auction and the white whale was harpooned! But..... :o a week ago this puppy showed up on eBay and the insane collector in me couldn't resist. :D This is not as nice as the one from Feb., but this one was also cheaper. Thanks for not judging, as I'm sure some of you here understand this sickness. :)

Wow thats a super 5. Congrats

Great card Chuck

Chuck, beautiful card... we are all an odd weird bunch infected with the same sickness;)

Collecting
Odd maybe, but not peculiar :)

So it begins. Here are some of the first additions to my HOF collection. As I've mentioned in another thread, I'm trying to collect one unique looking. contemporary card of every HOFer (including execs, etc.). Not the most original idea but it is / will be fun regardless! I'm up to 6 of nearly 300! Woot.
Eddie in his RC looks like he is about to kill someone after striking out while Hoyt looks possessed in his 54 topps. I like the cheesy dual tone of 75 topps so had to go for Yount's RC. |
Nice cards, Bryan -- good luck on your quest. HOFers are the most fun to collect, imo.
And thanks, guys, for the comments on the Mick Potato Chips. Bring on more scans! :) |
That Dan Dee Mantle is SWEET. I just got done reading the "America's Last Boy" about the Mick, and I got Mick fever...I want that card.
Nice cards all...I picked up a EX-NM 59 Maris and Aaron(Thanks Jason!) last week, no scans. Love them... |
