A fantastic addition to my postcard collection... 1905 Raymond Kahn Co. Lajoie
1 Attachment(s)
A 1905 Raymond Kahn Co. Lajoie postcard showed up at my house today, easily my favorite postcard! Postcards seem to be the direction I'm taking my collection in these days, they pop up sporadically for sale so I always get excited when I see a new one! Probably going to refocus my collection a bit and see what other PC's I can pick up in the new year.
Here's a link to my modest collection, took a couple of years to acquire what you see: http://imageevent.com/jeffintoronto/baseballpostcards Also, a big shout-out to Jeff P., my postcard Obi-Wan! |
Awesome Postcard!
Jeff,
Great pickup! Awesome postcard. Patrick |
That is one cool postcard. I've never seen that image of Lajoie before either. Are there others in the series or is it a one off?
Thanks, AndyH . |
Jeff:
That's quite a "modest" collection of postcards that you have there. |

Jeff, that team card with Joss is outrageous! That's what I love about postcards, seeing something I've never seen before.

Great pickup and fabulous collection Jeff!!

SICK Postcards!
gorgeous PC's Jeff in Toronto!
I recognize one or two of those...I see you've done some trading with and/or purchasing from Jeff in Texas! Anyway, I find myself gravitating more and more to the PC's as well...although only for one nefarious purpose (the pursuit of the impossible collection). Perhaps one day I'll change gears and go down the PC path. Keep up the good work! |
PC's
Great PC's Jeff!

Very nice! I've been gravitating towards PCs as well. Interesting and nice looking alternatives for prewar collecting. Then again, I've always been a large format card [exhibits and arcade cards] collector.
And yes, I realize I left the door open for a fat joke. It is a big door after all, since I have to get through it... |
As someone who might be interested in going into PCs, but has no experience with them yet (beyond the Ruth Shonen card), I wonder how easy or hard it is to sell a graded card if you buy it and then decide that this was a mistake, or you found one in higher grade, or just wanted to get cash for it to buy a different one. I'm not talking about making a profit, just being able to move it if you want or need to.

Greg:
If you have it priced fairly in the market, I think these days it would sell just about as well as a traditional card. |
I buy and sell them regularly and they sell just fine.
Another great thing about PCs is that some collectors [me included] are happy to buy cards that have been written on and mailed. I like the time capsule effect of it--adds character. The fact that under the grading regimes the cards are poor or fair is just a money-saving bonus. All of these would grade poor or fair at best but I'd rather have them than unused near mint versions, even signed: 1949 mailing date: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...acino%20PC.jpg Mailed from Brooklyn in 1957: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...Autod%20PC.jpg Signed and mailed while Paige was on the team: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...Lipset%201.jpg Or this 1958: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...igned%20PC.jpg |
Agreed, very nice Adam.

Love that Paige, Adam

can't imagine there would be an earlier Baker than that, I didn't win it, but looks like someone got a nice deal.
|
Wasn't me. Missed it entirely. Nice PC but I'm not a huge fan of ballplayers in dress clothes. In any event I can't imagine a much earlier shot of HRB.

Wow, never saw the Baker postcard on e-bay, didn't even know that it existed. I would have definitely paid more than the final sale price for it.........
|
Wow is right
I missed it as well... Darn. That would have looked great in my collection!
|
Another chance at that Baker rookie guys (not mine)...
http://loveofthegameauctions.com/Ite...0/585b_lg.jpeg LINK good luck! |
Postcards and Exhibits and the like are just bigger baseball cards (with a big plus for us older guys--we don't have to put on our reading glasses to look at and enjoy them!). I gravitated towards them sometime ago, without really realizing that they had become a major focus within my collection--I simply like them, and don't even consider them to fall within a different category from the more typical cards I have from all eras.
Love that Kiner, Adam. He's been one of my favorite players since I was a kid, and 1949 was certainly one of his best years: 54 HR's, 127 RBI, going purely by memory. He really had at least three years where he could easily have won the MVP if only the teams he played on had been better--plus he was the ONLY player ever to win 7 consecutive league homerun crowns, not to mention becoming a six-time all-star in only a ten-year career! Good thread! Larry |
That is a killer post card!
Congratulations on a super score! Dan |

Is that a Baker rookie or pre-rookie? Was Pocomoke in the major leagues? |

Other major leaguers depicted in this team photo are future Detroit/Philadelphia infielder Simon Nicholls, future St. Louis and Cincinnati infielder Chappy Charles, and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Al Burris, who threw just one game with the 1894 Phils before becoming a widely-regarded baseball man at the University of Maryland well into the 1920s. A wonderful document of the dawn of "Home Run Baker"'s early career, this postcard has been graded POOR by SGC, partially due to general wear consistent with a POOR grade but also because it was postally used: a 1905 letter to Anna Cooper of Paterson, New Jersey states, simply, "Dear Anna: These are some of Pocomoke's nice young men- -Anna" An excellent document of early amateur baseball, made notable by the pre-rookie appearance of Hall of Famer Frank "Home Run" Baker, along with several other future major leaguers. http://loveofthegameauctions.com/Lot...%29-Pre-rookie! |
