T206 Sovereign distributed in United Kingdom?
Recently on ebay there was a seller from England that had a group of close to 50 T206 cards. All the cards had Sovereign backs (many of them were from the tougher 460 series).
http://www.ebay.com/sch/lampard-livi...&LH_Complete=1 Has anyone else noticed previous groupings of T206 Sovereigns from the UK (or another grouping of strictly one brand)? Does this hint at the possibility that the cards may have had some sort of limited distribution overseas? Brian |
Hi Brian
Approx. 4 years ago I bought some T206 Sovereign cards from a guy in England.
I don't think it was this guy, though. I'll try to dig thru my records and see who it was. TED Z |
Brian - I've bought a number of T206's from sellers in the UK but haven't noticed any particular grouping of backs. Off the top of my head I remember buying a couple of Sweet Cap 150 No.649 OP's from the seller rarecigarettecards last year.
In the ACC there is a set of non-sport cards with Sovereign backs that are grouped with the tobacco wars cards in the high T numbers. I have read where some people think these may have been distributed overseas but I haven't been able to confirm this. Here's the back of one. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_.../s412/Back.jpg These cards were produced when the Sovereign brand was owned by the Universal Tobacco Company. ATC bought the rights to the Sovereign brand in August 1904 when the Universal Tobacco Company was broken up and auctioned off by court order. It would be interesting if proof was found of overseas distributions of T206's. |
English Sovereigns
I won several of these recent Ebay auctions. The seller indicated to me that he won the lot in an auction, but which auction was not asked or revealed. Do they have tobacco card auctions in England??? I suspect they might.

I won one of the cards and received it today - they definitely are real and not reprints or anything else, although the card I won may have a very slight trim to the bottom border (this was visible in the auction scan, so no surprise to me).

How appropiate for a country with Monarchs
Thanks for the replies so far guys (Ted, Frank, Tim etc.)...it would be interesting to find out if other groups of Sovereigns have originated from England. Tim it is intriquing that another Sovereign issue is considered to have possibly been distributed in the UK.
I didn't check all the lots, so correct me if I am wrong---were all these cards either 350 or 460 series backs? I don't remember seeing any 150 Series. Brian |
I looked at a lot of them. Most, if not all, were 460s or 350 Apple Greens.
I still have to confirm delivery of my cards. I'll try to find out where the alleged auction was (UK or US). |
T206 Sovereign England
I won the Doolan and Devore and received them today. They appear to be trimmed or handcut from a sheet. From the scans, I thought they all might be trimmed. I did not pay very much so I left positive feedback.
I paid quite a bit on ebay a number of years ago from a guy in England for a Chase port Sovereign and a Dougherty Sovereign that appeared high grade, but were deemed trimmed by sgc. I consigned them to B and L a few years ago. |
There are tobacco card collectors and dealers in Britain. I talked with one. He dealt in British issues, but said advanced British hobbyists were well aware of US baseball tobacco cards because they are the most expensive tobacco cards in the world.

I emailed the seller and think they were purchased at an auction in the UK and likely not recently (I've been looking at auctions over here for months and haven't seen any listed). This is the 2nd large lot of t206s that have been sold in the UK over the last 30 months. I'm led to believe there are a couple of significant collections of t-cards over here but have not been able to confirm if its a rumour or not.

Card collecting in the UK has been a serious hobby for decades. I lived in England in the early 70's and there were organized public auctions, mostly of British cards, but also including sports cards from the US. I can remember, as a young teenager, arriving too late an an auction to bid on a near complete set of T201's. Here is a link to one big London dealer:

UK card collecting most assuredly predates US card collecting, at least as we know it. I have bought quite a few US cards from folks overseas. They seem like a good bunch.

Yes, they have been collecting quite seriously much longer then we have. It's why you can still find 1920's-30's near pristine sports and non-sport sets from the U.K.. for dirt cheap. They've been bundling their sets up in rice and wax paper since before the War. I've no doubt they were trading back and forth across the Atlantic with the few serious North American collectors, back in the day. |
Prelim grade back
The prelim grade on the Oldring (S460) I won from that set of auctions came back a 45.
