Just picked up this Carey on the bay as there was no pic of the back and it might have gone a bit unnoticed. The title had the description so I nabbed it with high hopes. I thought the seller might have seen the other two on my site and just called it that, alas, he didn't. These really get no lovin' and I can kind of see why :eek:. Interestingly these are the only Cafe Du Monde cards I have seen and all are Pittsburgh players. If anyone has any W573s to show, and cares to admit it :), go for it....but I won't get my hopes up. :(

Leon...great Cafe nab. Besides yours I don't remember that many floating around. As for W573--I admit, I like them (consider the source, as I also like W9316, E91 cards and T202 end panels). In fact, I prefer the W573 over the E120 sets because they are just black and white and not that unnattractive sepia or green tinting of the American Caramel issue.

What is not well known is that there are actually two versions of the black and white blank backed W573's--the commonly seen thin paper ones that are handcut, and the much scarcer thicker cardboard ones that are (as far as I can tell) machine cut and have fuller borders. I will post a few examples when I have the chance.

The large size Quinn, DeVormer, Mostil and Aldridge cards are the heavy cardboard versions of W573. The Mostil with the punch hole is the sepia colored blank backs that are otherwise very similiar to the E120 set. The others are regular issue W573, American Caramel and Neilson cards, and are shown for comparision.

Note how much larger the heavy cardboard W573's are. All the ones I have seen are consistent in size like the four shown. Another interesting point is that the DeVormer W573 cards are designated with New York and Boston. DeVormer was traded to Boston in January of 1923, so this would indicate a likely issue date of 1922 for the hand cut paper issue, and 1923 for the heavy cardboard version.
