Congrats to the winner of this gem...Piedmont 42

I thought I was one of the few who may have saw this card. Congrats to the winner, wish it was mine, but oh well. More searching for me :).

Harford20 11-11-2012 07:13 PM

Was watching that Joss closely, but jumped out of my budget in the last seconds. A "no bid" here. Still searching here as well.

wazoo 11-11-2012 07:16 PM

Yeah the card is beat, but it doesnt matter because the back is so desired, especially with a HOF.

atx840 11-11-2012 08:28 PM

Waz our friend was an underbidder. :(

I was first underbidder.

Factory 42 is the only back that I'm missing that's actually possible for me. If the card had come up in the summer I'd have bid higher, but this time of year it's not possible.

Even a crummy common would be fine, Although I may save up for a halfway decent one come summer.

Nice eyes to all of you who spotted this one. I'm surprised the seller missed it in the description. Do you think it would've brought a lot more had he listed it noting the Factory 42 back?

I don't think so - it only takes two serious bidders. Compared to the nicer Sam Crawford that sold recently on ebay, I think this price is in line.

CobbSpikedMe 11-12-2012 11:13 AM

Hey Scott.

That's what I was thinking since it went for much more than a similar condition Joss would have had it had a common back. It obviously garnered the final bids due to the back.

Thanks for confirming though.

I think you stopped bidding at the right time... That card is U-G-L-Y

Definitely an ugly card... but some will go after a Piedy42 in any condition. I thought it would take $200 to win...

wazoo 11-12-2012 12:02 PM

This was the second unmentioned one I have seen in the last 4 months. I wanted it to be mine, I put it in for $127, and I was like other people must've seen it! So I'll just have to wait.

I know, but if you only wanted one, would that be the one? :)

not me... but the real question is more about affordability than present-ability.

I may have an extra common I can sell you at a good price to help get you to your goal. PM me this weekend and I can look for it. The reason I said I may have it is because I either sold the lower grade one or a PSA2 which looks nicer, can't remember and neither can the buyer right now(he is at work).

If the phrase "T206" is in the title, there are no secrets on ebay....

This one for $575 still sticks in my mind (not my card). Shouldn't it have brought quite a bit more? Based on current Goodwin prices it seems it should've.

mrvster 11-13-2012 05:00 AM

piedy 42....

i spotted the joss as soon as it was listed....as you guys know i love 42's, i was in on the bidding also, sorry waz:o.....they are tuffer than thought of.....the joss was ugly, but in any cond a fact 42 is quite worth it, esp. hofer...if it were in the descrip, i think it wouldve hit $250.00 at least..

i always wonder about piedy 42's and ab 460's at the same factory desig......is there some correlation....both are tuf ass backs....

chance was a 1 k card at least....2k in goodwin i beleive

I remember that card two, should have jumped on it.

You live and you learn.

I still need a P42...as I have always said, I think they are tougher than some give them credit for. And concerning the one in the original post, nice card. Not beautiful but still a nice hole-filler.

That's what she said...the last sentence.

Leon, I'm sure you remember ten years ago when P42's were sort of a novelty. If you even cared to have one, all you had to do was keep your eyes peeled and one would eventually pop up on ebay, and for the same price as other Piedmonts. It's just a little number '42', but I do understand that has huge meaning for a back or type collector.

I actually thought it was the opposite, most people didn't care because it was such a subtle difference, that there still could be tons of them out there sitting in collections and the owners don't even know.

As Scott said, they became popular awhile back and when I went through my cards and saw I didn't have one, I went on ebay and bid on the first two I saw that same day, won them both for a decent price. I know Johnny V stocked up on them quickly too.

They really went from very rare to coming out of the woodwork quick back then and the prices were reasonable, despite the new-found interest, likely because people collected brands not specific backs. They still pop up from time to time with no mention of the 42 back because as I said, lots of people still don't know.

atx840 11-14-2012 07:32 PM

There was a lot on eBay of 10-15 t206s in VG-EX condition a few months back that where listed as "early baseball tobacco cards". It included two very nice 42s mixed in.....it still received a lot of bids.

..I'll bet there are lots still hidden away.

Found it -

Hey Scott
Fortunately I was a general type back collector even back then. I got most of my 06 backs, as many members, when the times were better for getting them...here are a few examples...

schei ab460 vg-ex 70
moeller bl350 gd-vg 20
mcaleese cb vg-ex 70
geyer cyc460 vg 100
chase trphy lenox vg-ex 260
marquard br-hin gd 75

But no P42 :(

OK, but you haven't asked about shipping and handling :). It's the big auction house style of selling, give'em the burger and make 'em pay for the pickles!!

frankbmd 11-15-2012 07:27 AM

I'm headed your way tomorrow. Local pick up is fine with me.

That will cover the shipping but the handling fee just shot up!!!

Take your shirt off. I'll bring the girls.

Runscott 11-15-2012 01:47 PM

I know, I will be like a cat chasing his tail :). And figure I will show some backs since we are talking about them, but alas, no P42.

atx840 11-15-2012 04:28 PM

I have a nice 42 for you Leon, I'll gladly trade it for your brown OM :D

Nice cards, you should get your blank in there as well.

It is not comprehensive it's just some of them I have in a single scan. Here are a few more...(shown many times but still neat cards AND many new members won't have seen them)...and of course a ton of members have much better back collections than I do and that is no prob at all. We should all be proud of what we have, it's all relative.

wazoo 11-15-2012 05:42 PM

I agree, Wazoo...those are some great looking backs and that Cy Young is killer! Every week or so I go through my cards just for enjoyment purposes...I would be in heaven if I flipped through that stack every week!

Yeah! I have some nice cards, but no backs that compare to those. My strongest is a Brown Hindu. Each collection is unique, which is great!
