Lets play "guess the player in the photo" again
Twenty years ago my daughter's teacher found out I was a collector of sports "stuff" and wanted to show me something that has been in her family for years. Since she was getting married soon and her husband to be was a huge sports fan she was going to give these items to him as a wedding present and would not sell them too me. She did offer to make me very clear copies so I could save them for myself and I uncovered these copies in a box today.
What the teacher had was seven snap shots taken in Wrigley Field during the late 20's early 30's (I havent tried to narrow down dates yet) in which the players posed for her grandfather. The story was that her grandfather was a young boy and would beg the players to stop so he could take a picture of them The teacher had no idea at the time who the players were and we sat down with a 1933 Speed Johnson Who's Who book that I had and we came up with some names. Some are obvious such as Hack Wilson but some not so much. I would be interested to hear thoughts on who each of these players in the snap shots actually are. The following are the photo's that the teacher made copies of along with who I think the player is. (Thankfully the teacher wrote her name on one of the pages....I am going to give her a call and see if she wants to sell!!) This first photo I am a bit stumped on The one on the left I have no idea and maybe the one on the right is Charlie Grimm? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...rds/snaps4.jpg The next photo is a bit easier as I think this is Riggs Stevenson and Hack Wilson (No doubt about Wilson) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...rds/snaps3.jpg The next photo I believe might be Rogers Hornsby??? I have no idea on this one. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...rds/snaps2.jpg The next photo I believe is Kiki Cuyler on the left and a very young Stan Hack on the right? Again, Not totally sure about these two but I am confident on the Cuyler. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...rds/snaps1.jpg I thought the pictures were very interesting and I wish I had the originals. |
I think the one on the left in your second row is Charlie Grimm, not Riggs Stephenson. Pretty sure the guy in the first row you thought was Grimm is not.
I agree with your KiKi Cuyler and Hack Wilson ID's. Those are just my first impressions glancing over them. Do you know if these were all taken the same day, or at least the same year? If so, just those three ID's narrows it down to a 1928-1931 time frame. |
I think the 5th photo is Riggs Stephenson

The smiling fella in the second photo looks like Gabby Hartnett to me.
Graig |
1. possibly lon warneke
2.hartnett 3.grimm 4 wilson 5 stepehson 6 cuyler 7 root #1 is the only one im not positive as warneke was a righty and that guy looks lefty. |

#1 is not Lon Warneke, FWIW
Here is a photo of "The Arkansas Hummingbird" in action. Note that Warneke is a right handed thrower, not lefty as in the snapshot posted above. |

Thanks for the responses guys!!
I guess I was pretty far off with a few of these and never even gave Hartnett a thought! Any possibility that the 1st picture could be Grimm? To answer on of the questions, it is my understanding that these photos were taken all on the same day. |
How about Clyde Beck for the first one? Tough to tell for sure with the face being out-of-focus and shaded in yours, so that's still mostly a guess.

No. |
He does have a resemblance to Beck as well but Beck is right handed too :(

Cubs lefties from that era with prominent ears leads me to Cliff Heathcote, but the lack of detail in the photo keeps me from being able to do more than guess.

Okay, so going strictly on the "Lefty" scenario for 1928-31, we have the following: Cliff Heathcote 1928-30 Joe Kelly 1928 Art Nehf 1928-29 Percy Jones 1928 Lefty Weinert 1928 Mike Cvengros 1929 Bud Teachout 1930-31 Jesse Petty 1930 Mal Moss 1930 Les Sweetland 1931 Jakie May 1931-32 My money (if I had any left after the Clyde Beck fumble) would be on Weinert, whose jawline looks most similar to me out of the above list. http://d3k2oh6evki4b7.cloudfront.net...ty_Weinert.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...rds/snaps4.jpg I don't have a scan of Weinert, so will have to go by his head shot from baseball-reference.com |

Hey Scott! Yeah, seeing him head-on, and next to Heathcote to boot, I think you're right that Heathcote is a better match. The shape of his head seems to be a better match. I should have known you would have a better shot of him!
|
yeah heathcote seems closest
